Where is John Gotti now? The story of the Mafia’s most colourful character

Who is John Gotti and what did he do?

John Gotti was an American gangster, and the boss of the Gambino crime family. He was also responsible for the deaths of many of his associates and enemies, most notably, former boss Paul Castellano, whom he ordered a brutal hit on in December 1985, paving way for him to become the boss.

Gotti was one of the most powerful crime bosses in the United States during the 80’s and early 90’s, and was known for his flamboyant silk suits and colourful personality, going against everything the Mob stood for.

How was John Gotti caught?

John Gotti became known as The Teflon Don as the state could never make charges against him stick. Three high profile trials in the 1980’s ended up in him being acquitted, thanks to witness intimidation and jury tampering.

Law enforcement continued gathering evidence against Gotti, using wire taps inside the Ravenite Social Club, which was the headquarters of the Gambino crime family.

They were also able to convince Gotti’s underboss, Sammy Gravano to testify against him, after figuring out he was probably next to be murdered for knowing too much about the criminal organisation, as well as a wire tap implicating him in a number of murders.

Gotti was convicted of five murders, racketeering and tax evasion, amongst other charges, and received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Where is John Gotti now?

John Gotti served his life sentence at the United States Penitentiary in Marion. In 1998, he was diagnosed with throat cancer and sent to the United States Medical Centre for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri for treatment. He succumbed to the disease and died in 2002.

An estimated 300 people followed the procession after his funeral, and he was still considered a legend to many in his local community, despite his heinous crimes.

Many movies and documentaries have been made about the former Gambino crime boss, with Armand Assante portraying him in HBO Films 1996 hit, Gotti. John Travolta also played him the under-rated Gotti in 2018.

Netflix have just released a new three part documentary series about how the authorities finally brought him to justice, titled Get Gotti
