What did Jared Fogle do?
Jared Fogle is an American former spokesman for the sandwich company, Subway. He appeared in their advertising campaigns from 2000 to 2015 until the FBI led an investigation that ended up in his conviction for child sex tourism and possessing child pornography.
Allegations against Fogle started to surface in 2007, claiming he had inappropriate relations with children. However, it took until 2015 for the allegations to lead to a proper investigation when the FBI discovered that he received child pornography from an associate.
Fogle originally shot to fame when he was a student at Indiana University and he lost 245 Ib between 1998 and 1999. As part of his diet plan, he often ate at Subway, which led the company to hire him to advertise for them the following year. He appeared in over 300 commercials during 15 years working for the company.
What happened at the trial?
On the 19th of August 19, 2015, prosecutors announced they had reached a deal with Fogle in which he would plead guilty to the indictment containing 2 counts, 1 of distribution and receipt of child pornography and 1 of travelling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a child.
Fogle faced up to 50 years in prison if he’d gone to trial, based on potentially serving a maximum of 20 years on Count 1 and a maximum of 30 years on Count 2. Fogle would also have to pay $1.4 million in restitution. As a condition of his plea deal, Fogle would be restricted to supervised contact with children but this would have to receive the approval of his probation officer. As for his own children, supervised visits would be allowed only with the approval of their mother. Upon release from prison, Fogle will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life and undergo treatment for sexual disorders.
Jared Fogle officially pleaded guilty to the child sex tourism and child pornography charges in October 2015 and was sentenced to 15 years and 8 months in federal prison.
Where is Jared Fogle now?
Fogle is currently incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood, near Littleton, Colorado. Soon after the plea deal in his case was announced, Subway cut ties with Fogle.
In November 2021, Fogle wrote a letter from prison to the New York Post saying he “royally screwed up” and claimed he runs 4 to 5 miles a day and works out regularly behind bars.
A 3-part documentary film about Fogle and his crimes titled Jared from Subway: Catching a Monster was broadcast on the ID pay TV network in March 2023.
