Where is Israel Keyes now? | The Cross Country Serial Killer

Israel Keyes

What did Israel Keyes do?

Israel Keyes was an American serial killer who killed at least 3 people and committed a string of other offences, including armed robbery, arson, rape and burglary between 2001 and 2012.

Keyes’ method of killing was usually strangulation, as he got pleasure from witnessing his victims lose consciousness during the struggle. Police believe he killed many more victims than the 3 they can prove. He would travel across the United States targeting campgrounds and isolated locations to carry out his crimes. This led to him being dubbed “The Cross Country Serial Killer.”

How was Israel Keyes caught?

Keyes kidnapped Samantha Koenig from her workplace on February 1, 2012, and killed her the following day. After taking a 2-week cruise, he picked up Koenig’s body and applied makeup to the corpse’s face, sewed her eyes open with a fishing line and demanded $30,000 ransom money. This led police to track withdrawals from Koenig’s account as Keyes moved throughout the southwest of America.

Keyes was arrested on the morning of March 13, 2012. He was extradited to Alaska, where he confessed to the Koenig murder. Keyes was charged with the murder, and his trial was scheduled to begin in March 2013. While in prison, Keyes spoke to investigators and confessed to some of his crimes. He stated his wish to be executed within a year. However, on the 23rd of May 2012, Keyes tried to escape during a routine hearing. He ultimately failed after being tasered by U.S. Marshals.
