What did David Berkowitz do? 

David Berkowitz is an American serial killer who used a .44 Special caliber Bulldog revolver to kill six people and wound seven others in a spree of attacks in New York City in 1976 and 1977. He left notes at the scenes of the murders, mocking the police and threatening more attacks. 


What happened during the trial of David Berkowitz?

Berkowitz was arrested on the 10th August, 1977. He confessed to all of the shootings and claimed to have been obeying the orders of a demon that manifested in the form his neighbour’s black dog. Berkowitz was found mentally competent to stand trial, and he was sentenced to six consecutive life sentences with the possibility of parole after 25 years. He also later admitted that the possessed dog story was a lie.


How did the media treat the Son of Sam case? 

The media seemed to revel in the case, and their coverage led to Berkowitz becoming a celebrity of sorts. He seemed to enjoy all the attention. A new statute was brought in to stop criminals profiting from their crimes, known as the ”Son of Sam laws” and the statutes have remained despite various legal challenges. 


Where is David Berkowitz now? 

Berkowitz is currently incarcerated at Shawangunk Correctional Facility, located in New York’s Hudson Valley. He is 70 years of age.

He now considers himself to be an evangelical Christian and claims he was a member of a Satanic cult that set up the murders as some kind of ritual killings. A new investigation in 1996 concluded that this was not true, and it was suspended indefinitely. 

Berkowitz has recently conducted an interview with reformed gangster, Michael Franzese, which is due to be aired on his Youtube channel.
