Where is Benjamin Keough now? | The tragic story of Elvis Presley’s grandson

Benjamin Keough

Who is Benjamin Keough?

Benjamin Keough was the grandson of pop sensation Elvis Presley. He was born on the 21st October, 1992 in Tampa, Florida, and his parents were Elvis’ only daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, and Danny Keough, who was a touring musician for jazz legend Chick Corea.

How did Benjamin Keough die?

On the 12th July, 2020, Keough shot himself at a party that was jointly held for his girlfriend, Diana Pinto, and his brother-in-law, Ben Smith-Peterson.

Initial reports suggested that Keough shot himself in the chest, but the Los Angeles coroner later confirmed that he put the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. Neighbours apparently heard someone scream ”don’t do it” before they heard the sound of a gunshot.

The autopsy report stated that Keough had alcohol and cocaine in his system at the time of his death, and there were suggestions that this wasn’t his first attempt at suicide.

Keough had battled with mental illness for many years, with the struggle to match the success of his grandfather being considered one of the reasons for his slide into a deep depression. He was just 27 when he died.

What was Benjamin Keough’s childhood like?

Benjamin Keough had a colourful childhood, growing up with the legacy of his grandfather’s success and the wealth that he inherited. The family was heavily involved in the Church of Scientology, which Keough later suggested had a very negative effect on him.

Keough watched on as his mother, Lisa Marie, went from one failed marriage to another after leaving his father for the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, in 1994. This marriage ended in 1996, and she went on to marry Elvis super fan and Hollywood legend Nicolas Cage. This marriage only lasted 100 days.

When Keough turned 17, he expressed a desire to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and become a singer. Universal reportedly offered him a $5 million record contract in 2009, and despite recording some songs, nothing was ever released.

Where is Benjamin Keough now?

Benjamin Keough was buried at the Meditation Garden at Graceland alongside his grandfather, Elvis Presley.

Lisa Marie Presley was known to be distraught at the loss of her only son, and this led to a downward spiral in her life. On the 12th of January, 2023, she suffered a cardiac arrest at her home in California and died later that day at the age of 54.
