Who is Arohn Kee?
In the 1990’s, a series of rape and murder cases occurred in East Harlem. The victims, all young girls, were found strangled and stabbed. These horrific acts were perpetrated by one serial killer named Arohn Kee.
On June 2nd 1998, the police responded to a call regarding a young girl who had been killed, initially suspected to be due to asphyxiation. It was later confirmed that the body was that of Rasheda, a girl who had been reported missing 24 hours earlier by her parents. An autopsy revealed that Rasheda had also been sexually assaulted. The police ran the DNA recovered from Rasheda through their criminal database, but no match was found.
Why was Arohn Kee let go?
In the following months, the pattern of sexual assaults continued. Another girl was assaulted, and DNA evidence linked the perpetrator to Rasheda’s case. Thereafter, another victim came forward, who claimed to have been assaulted by the same African-American man.
A composite sketch was created based on her description and circulated widely. An anonymous tip led the police to their first tangible suspect, Arohn Key, an African American with a violent history. However, Key was released due to a lack of concrete evidence implicating him in the crimes.
How was Arohn Kee caught?
During the course of the investigation, the police were able to connect Arohn Kee to another horrific murder that took place eight years ago, where the body of a teenage girl was found ten blocks from her home. The girl was identified as Paula, and she had multiple stab wounds and was also sexually assaulted.
However, before the cops could arrest Arohn, he destroyed the pinhole camera that the cops had placed outside his house and escaped. Thanks to the mother of Kee’s girlfriend, the cops tracked Arohn to a Miami hotel and detained him. Arohn refused to talk to the cops, but when he was allowed to meet with his girlfriend, Arohn spilled everything to her.
Where is Arohn Kee now?
With the help of 140 witness accounts and a mound of evidence, the prosecution was able to construct a solid case against Arohn Kee.
In a last-ditch effort, Arohn tried to form a fake story claiming he had stumbled upon an illegal organ harvesting operation run by the Medical Examiner’s office.
However, neither the judge nor the jury believed his story, and Arohn Kee, on Dec 16, 2000, was found guilty on all charges. Arohn Kee was sentenced to 409 years in prison.
