Gerald and Charlene Gallego

What did Gerald and Charlene Gallego do?

Gerald and Charlene Gallego were American serial killers who were active in Sacramento, California between 1978 and 1980. They killed 11 people, mostly of whom were teenagers, and they kept them as sex slaves before ending their lives.

They were a couple who had a twisted sex life, and this escalated when Gerald brought home a 16-year-old exotic dancer whom they ended up having a threesome with. Things took a sinister turn when Gerald discovered the 2 women were having sex alone, so he beat Charlene after throwing the exotic dancer out of an open window in anger. Gerald demanded they pick up more sex slaves to satisfy his desires, and they ended up murdering these girls after using them for their sick fantasies.

What led to Gerald and Charlene’s arrest?

On the 1st of November 1980, Craig Miller and his fiancée Mary Elizabeth Sowers were forced into the Gallegos’ car at gunpoint, and they took them to a remote location and shot and killed them.

A friend of Miller and Sowers had witnessed the abduction and recorded the car’s licence plate number. Police used this information to track down and arrest Gerald and Charlene Gallego at a Western Union office. They pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping and murder. Charlene’s defence lawyers managed to convince prosecutors to let her testify against Gerald in exchange for a plea deal, reducing her sentence to 16 years and 8 months.

In June 1983, Gerald was sentenced to death for the murders of Mary Beth Sowers and Craig Miller. The following year, Gerald was convicted for the murders of 2 more victims, Karen Twiggs and Stacey Redican, and also sentenced to death. This death sentence was overturned in 1997.
