The Cloak Of Duplication
Episode 2 of What We Do In The Shadows Season 3 begins with Nandor and Nadja deciding to “share power” for the time being as joint Supreme Leaders. Only, that’s a hot topic here, as both Nadja and Nandor have their own ideas for seizing power for themselves.
As The Guide continues to show the gang the ropes, the big talking point here is the Chamber of Curiosities. It turns out this is also the home of The Sire, an ancient vampire that birthed many of the vampires seen today. It also holds the Cloak of Duplication too which – as you may have guessed – turns the wearer into a copy of someone else.
This gives Nandor an idea, given his affection for Meg, a fitness trainer at a 24 hour gymnasium he frequents. She happens to be the receptionist there but Nandor isn’t very confident.
He tries to use Laszlo’s powers but instead, he passes the cloak on to Colin Robinson. That inevitably goes completely wrong when a bouncer forces him out, and Laszlo attempting damage control doesn’t do much better – especially when he rocks out the pornography.
It then falls to Guillermo to try his luck… who manages to convince Meg that he’s actually gay! Only as fate would have it, Meg happens to be a lesbian. When Nandor realizes this, he’s not exactly happy.
Away from this subplot, Colin Robinson heads out with Nandor and Nadja, who are tasked with checking up on a rogue vampire group. It turns out they too have an energy vampire among them called Dave Lewis. As Colin and Dave talk about their origins, Nadja decides to take matters into her own hands and kills their leader, ripping his heart out and showing that they mean business. It certainly gets through to them too, as the group all drop to their knees.
With Nandor questioning his purpose and Nadja assuming control for now, she dons the Cloak of Duplication to try some new moves with Laszlo.
The Episode Review
The second episode of What We Do In The Shadows deepens the ties between our characters, especially with Nandor’s desire to be more than a blood-lusting vampire. The whole subplot involving Meg is a lovely inclusion and the hilarious little twist at the end works well to subvert expectations.
Likewise, the ongoing issues involving the vampire council add an extra dimension to this third season, giving an interesting twist to our players as we’re left to wonder who becomes the Supreme Leader by the end. My money’s on Colin Robinson, but take that prediction with a pinch of salt – it could even be Guillermo at this point!
Interestingly, the show looks to be exploring Colin Robinson’s origins a lot more in the coming episodes, with the energy vampire shindig looking to take on a much deeper role this year. Either way, this continues to be one of the funniest shows on TV, and it’ll be interesting to see what direction this one takes next.
