What is the latest on the Gilgo Beach serial killer case?

Rex Heuermann, suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer, was originally charged with 3 murders, but since his arrest, he has been charged with a fourth murder.

Heuermann has been formally charged with the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, whose body was discovered along with 3 other women near Gilgo Beach in Long Island.

He has pleaded not guilty to the murder of all the women – who have become known as the Gilgo Four.

Who is Heuermann’s defence lawyer?

Heuermann’s lawyer is a man called Michael Brown, and he has come out and said his client maintains his innocence and is looking forward to defending himself in court.

Brown also questioned some of the evidence put forward that supposedly points towards Heuermann’s guilt. He claims new DNA analysis was “problematic” since it was introduced over  13 years after Brainard-Barnes’ body was discovered.

What could happen to Heuermann?

Heuermann is currently being held in jail without bail as he awaits his murder trial. He faces several life sentences without the possibility of parole if he is convicted. He is 59 years old. A date for the trial hasn’t been set yet.

The case also features in the Netflix true crime drama series, Lost Girls.
