Who was Sheena Bora?
Sheena Bora was an executive working for Mumbai Metro One, born to Indrani Mukerjea, a businesswoman. In the 2024 Netflix Documentary, The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth, Indrani alleges that Sheena was her daughter, born after she was raped by her stepfather – Upendra Kumar Bora.
Initially, Indrani introduced Sheena as her sister but the truth about Sheena was later revealed to be dating her stepfather, Peter Mukerjea’s son Rahul Mukerjea. It is alleged that Indrani did not approve of Sheena’s relationship with her step-brother. Sheena’s dead body was discovered in Raigad, Maharashtra after she was strangled to death and her corpse burned inside a bag.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) contended that Peter and Indrani Mukerjea had a financial motive to Sheena’s murder because they had siphoned off money from their media company and parked it in an offshore Singapore bank account in Sheena Bora’s name.
What happened to Sheena Bora?
On April 24, 2012, Sheena allegedly took a leave of absence from work and sent in her resignation letter in writing. On the same day, it was alleged that she send an SMS to her fiancé, Rahul Mukerjea, breaking up with him. Indrani had initially revealed that Sheena had moved to the United States to complete her education. However, after no contact with Sheena, Rahul insisted that the Mumbai Police look into Sheena’s sudden disappearance.
Indrani visited Mumbai’s Worli police station and informed the officers that Rahul was trying to stalk Sheena and that was why Sheena had moved to the US without informing him. Indrani’s driver, Shyamvar Pinturam Rai was arrested for the possession of illegal weapons and he had allegedly revealed details of Sheena’s murder after his arrest.
How did Sheena Bora die?
According to Shyamvar’s alleged testimony, Indrani had planned Sheena’s murder and discussed it with her ex-husband, Sanjeev Khanna. Moreover, Indrani had also surveyed a likely area to dump the body. On the night of Sheena’s disappearance, Indrani, Sanjeev, and driver Rai picked Sheena up in a car rented out by Indrani.
The trio drove off and Sanjeev strangled Sheena inside the car. The police also allege that Sheena’s body was taken to Indrani’s house where it was put in a bag and stuffed in the trunk of the car. In the early hours of 25th April 2012, the three accused drove to a village in Raigad, Maharashtra with Sheena’s body propped up and seated inside the car to avoid police speculation.
In the early hours of 24th August 2012, the trio dragged Sheena’s body out of the car to an isolated spot in the forest and burned it after stuffing it back into the bag. After the body was completely burnt, the three returned to Mumbai.
What happened to Indrani Mukerjea?
Four months after Sheena’s disappearance and murder, Indrani Mukerjea was arrested. Indrani was charged with murder, causing the disappearance of evidence, criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery, kidnapping and conspiracy. On 26th August 2015, Indrani’s ex-husband Sanjeev was also arrested in Kolkata and charged with kidnapping, murder, causing the disappearance of evidence and conspiracy.
It was alleged that both Sanjeev and Indrani’s driver, Shyamvar Pinturam Rai had allegedly confessed to the offences. On November 19th 2015, Peter Mukerjea was arrested on charges related to Sheena Bora’s murder and also accused of siphoning company funds into a bank account in Sheena Bora’s name in Singapore.
After more than 6 years of her arrest, Indrani was granted bail in 2022. The Sheena Bora Case still awaits trial with 237 prosecution witnesses and 185 defence witnesses still to be examined. Indrani’s bail conditions included surrendering her passport, not contacting any of the witnesses, and not seeking adjournment of the case.
