What happened to Jill Dando?
Jill Dando was an English journalist, television presenter and newsreader who was shot dead on the doorstep of her home in Fulham, England, on the 26th of April 1999.
It became the biggest murder inquiry conducted by the Metropolitan Police and the country’s largest criminal investigation since the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper.
Theories about who killed her and what the motive was began circulating. She was a high-profile figure who co-presented the BBC One programme Crimewatch with Nick Ross, with many thinking her death could be linked to crimes she was investigating on the show.
Who was Barry George?
The media covered the case in detail, and the police were under pressure to find the perpetrator. A local man called Barry George was arrested on suspicion of murder.
He was later was convicted for the murder and sentenced to life in prison. However, after 8 years in prison, he was acquitted following an appeal and retrial. Nobody else has been charged with Dando’s murder and the case remains unsolved to this day.
Who killed Jill Dando?
There was a suggestion that Dando’s murder was ordered by a Serbian warlord called Arkan in retaliation for the NATO bombing of the RTS headquarters. The NCIS gave an intelligence report to the Dando murder inquiry that made a potential connection between the bullet used to kill Dando and bullets used in assassinations in Germany.
Just a few days before Dando was murdered, an opposition journalist called Slavko Ćuruvija was assassinated outside his home in Belgrade and the method used in this case was identical to Dando’s murder.
Netflix released a 3-part documentary series about the case in 2023, titled Who Killed Jill Dando?
