What happened to Christian Marriott?

Christian Marriott was a 46-year-old man who died when a car hit him and a group of people after he stopped to help a woman who was lying unconscious in the street in Sheffield, England, in December 2023.

Marriott was out for a walk with his wife and 2 young sons in the afternoon when he stopped to help the woman, who had been involved in a dispute between a group of people in a wedding party.

What happened next?

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of Marriott’s murder and a 55-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. One of the other people who was helping at the scene was seriously injured but survived the incident.

Christian Marriott was a good man who was trying to help a member of the public and lost his life for it, and the community was reeling after hearing the news. Many came forward to pay tribute to Marriott, who spent his life helping people. He worked for the charity Community Money Advice and also volunteered at a food bank in Sheffield. For his wife and 2 young sons to witness his death is just horrendous and something that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. The woman who Christian Marriott was helping in the street is in a life-threatening condition in hospital, but she is still alive.

Who and where is Christian Marriott’s suspected killer now?

Hassan Jhangur is the man accused of Marriott’s murder, and he appeared in court in late December charged with murder and 5 counts of attempted murder.

Jhangur has been remanded in custody, and he appeared again at Sheffield Crown Court on the 2nd January 2024. His trial will begin on the 15th of July 2024 and is due to last around 4 weeks.

Jhangur appeared by video link, and he spoke to confirm his name and that he understood the charges against him. He didn’t enter a plea but his lawyer, Richard Davies did suggest his client would plead not guilty.

A GoFundMe page was created to raise money for Marriott’s family, and it has raised over £40,000 so far. For a man who spent his life giving back to the community, this is the very least his family deserves.
