What happened to Andrew Sadek?

Andrew Sadek, featured in True Crime Story Season 2, was a student at the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton. Sadek was arrested in 2013 for felony charges of selling marijuana that legally could have resulted in a long prison sentence. However, Sadek agreed to work as a confidential informant for the South East Multi-County Agency Narcotics Task Force (SEMCA) in exchange for the charges being dropped. Under police supervision, he bought more marijuana from other dealers in and around the college campus.

When was Andrew Sadek last seen alive?

Sadek was last seen leaving his dormitory on the morning of the 1st of May 2014. Nearly two months later, Sadek’s body was found in the Red River north of Breckenridge, Minnesota, adjacent to Wahpeton, with a gunshot wound to the head. The nature of his death remains undetermined, but the police indicated that they believe it was a suicide. However, Sadek’s family think he was murdered. Their reasoning for this is because the backpack that was attached to his body was filled with rocks, and neither a suicide note nor the weapon used in his death were ever located.

What is Andrew’s law?

Sadek’s mother pushed for the state to investigate the police’s handling of her son’s case. However, they found no serious concerns, although SEMCA did make minor changes to its procedures afterward. Sadek’s parents filed a lawsuit over their son’s death and campaigned tirelessly for changes to state law that would reduce penalties for marijuana possession on college campuses, while also protecting CIs.

These changes were made through a piece of legislation known as “Andrew’s Law”, which was passed in 2017.
