What happened to Alysha Duran? | Behind the controversial police shooting

What happened to Alysha Duran?

Alysha Duran was a motorist who was shot and killed by a police officer in Westminster, Colorado, on the 25th of July 2023. The police claimed Duran reached for a gun when an officer approached her car as it was stopped on the wrong side of the road. The cop immediately retreated behind her car after noticing the firearm, which is not seen in the bodycam footage that was released. The officer is heard screaming “What have you got in there?” before opening fire after only a few seconds.

The fatal shot fired through Duran’s rear driver’s side window, ultimately killed her. The officer has only been identified as N. Adams thus far, and people who have seen the bodycam footage seem to be divided on whether the shooting was justified. Some claim the officer fired too quickly, while others argue the killing was justified.

What did the bodycam footage show?

The bodycam footage begins with the police officer arriving at a bizarre situation where Duran is stopped in the road, facing another vehicle. It is unclear what led Duran to stop in this way.

The officer approached Duran as she sat in her car alone. She then seemed to ignore him when he ordered her to roll down her window, taking several minutes before she eventually followed the orders.

The officer asked her if she was okay, and what she was doing in the road, when Duran bizarrely grabbed her pendant necklace and began rubbing it. The situation quickly escalated when the officer reportedly spotted a gun next to her.

The officer screamed after reportedly spotting the firearm and grabbed his own gun from his holster and sprinted around the back of her car before opening fire.

What happened in the aftermath of the shooting?

Alysha Duran was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. The Police Chief, Cheri Spottke revealed a gun was later found in Duran’s car, and the officer who fired the shot had been working on the force for more than 20 years. The officer was then placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting was investigated.

Where is N. Adams now?

The officer known only as N. Adams said, “I’m so sorry,” after the shooting incident, while speaking to the nearby vehicle where the shooting took place. The officer reportedly sounded on the verge of tears.

The 17th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team is currently conducting an investigation into the shooting, with a decision not yet made on N. Adams’ actions on that fateful day.

  1. Adam’s asked her numerous times if she was ok or if she needed an ambulance. She wouldn’t respond and remained unresponsive as he kept asking. She made a move and wouldn’t answer him. He had to protect himself!

  2. Completely justifiable shooting! An officer does not have to be fired upon before firing his weapon. He may use lethal force if he believes his life or someone else’s life in danger. The weapon in the car was later determined to belong to a family member of Ms. Duran.

  3. Yeah….because in these circumstances the police must wait to be shot-at before they do anything…and the gun was probably planted …the cop was aggressive and “trigger-happy” from the start- its easy to tell that….that why the cap asked about the ambulance- big cover-up….he couldn’t wait to pull his gun and shoot

  4. Alysha never pointed the gun at him. Let alone tried to harm him. She was probably going for her license and registrations and if Nick Adam saw a gun he should’ve backed up and continue to call it in and get back up and if he thought he was so threatened to talk her down, not immediately shoot her in the back of the head.
This is BS Nick Adams and the Adams County need to pay for their actions in the situation. She never gave the officer any reason to shoot her in the head. This cop has had other situations and complaints on him. he is a trigger-happy son of a bitch.
