The Origin Story of Toey’s Crush on Q
Episode 6 of We Are starts where we left off after Pheem and Phum’s kiss, which makes Pheem feel shy afterwards while Phum cannot stop grinning. In class the following day, Pheem hypothetically asks Q about what happened between him and Phum. He wants to know what it means if two people kiss but are not officially together, and Q advises that he figure out how he feels about the person he kissed before having a conversation about it.
Next, the friends visit the Fine Arts Gallery to support Q, who’s displaying his work. Phum spends time following Pheem at the gallery and taking photos, which makes Pheem a little uncomfortable since he acts like nothing has happened between them. Phum starts to feel guilty about destroying Pheem’s painting as it could have been displayed at the gallery.
Toey leaves Q a note beside his work that makes Q smile as if reminiscing. He then shows up and congratulates Q for his work of art. Q invites him for desserts and takes him to Oh’s café, where Toey first saw Q. Q is surprised that Oh knows Toey and learns that Toey is also Oh’s VIP customer. Q wonders why he and Toey had never met before if they were both regulars at his café, and Toey explains that it is because they came at different times. Q asks why Toey often went to the café and says it is where he knew someone and frequently hoped to run into him again.
After everyone else leaves, Phum insists that Pheem take him around the gallery, and they stop at the painting booth. Fai gets all giggly as she reads between the lines and notices that Phum and Pheem are more than just friends. Phum drives Pheem home after the gallery and asks about Pheem’s semester break plans. Pheem complains that Phum insists on doing whatever he wants, and Phum reminds him that he, too, is doing the same and tries to bring up the night they kissed. Pheem makes excuses since he does not want to discuss it and runs into the house.
The semester break starts, and Q invites Toey and Mathew to a party at Pheem’s house. During the drinking party, they play the King game, and in the process, Chain and Pun closer when Q asks their card numbers to give each other forehead kisses. Pun gets the King card next and gets revenge by asking two card numbers to give each other three cheek kisses; the numbers coincidentally are Q and Toey.
The guys then sleep over at Pheem’s house, sprawled on the floor. The following morning, Mathew accidentally blurts out that Toey has feelings for Q when he mentions that the game got his heart racing. The boys are shocked by the realisation and want to know how Toey came to like Q.
Toey tells them the origin of his love story with Q by taking them back to his school days. Toey was a regular at Oh’s café, and he happened to see a boy he was both attracted to and envious of. The boy seemed sure of what he wanted to do and was very passionate about it, but could not figure out what he wanted to do. Then, one day, an interesting story happened when Toey found a pencil box hidden behind some plants, and Oh said that the owner had been looking for it nonstop. Toey gives Oh the pencil box to return to the owner and asks for a reward.
In response, the pencil owner draws him a cute photo and asks Oh to give it to Toey. Toey wants Oh to thank him, but he refuses, saying he will thank him after they run into each other at the restaurant. Since running into each other was not guaranteed, Toey writes a thank you note and sticks it behind one of the paintings, which started a back and forth between him and the pencil boy, leaving post-it notes behind the painting for a whole year.
Toey would talk to the pencil senior about his worries, and the pencil senior would offer encouraging words. At the same time, he continues to become increasingly amazed by the boy who comes to the café to draw and starts getting interested in the same. However, after some time, both the Post-it boy and the drawing boy disappeared, and he did not know why. Then, after some time, he ran into the boy again and discovered that the boy he was attracted to and the pencil senior were Q. He became his inspiration and got him to try drawing, and he got into the same school as Q.
The story amazes the boys, and they are impressed at how Toey managed to be close to Q while he had feelings for him for so long and did not confess. Toey wants to maintain what they have between them now as mentor-mentee since he is unsure that Q feels the same. However, Pheem thinks that Q has feelings for Toey but is tight-lipped and unable to confess his feelings. Therefore, Pun comes up with an idea to help Q realise his feelings and speak up. Chain is to pretend he is hitting on Toey around Q and see if he reacts.
The following day, Pheem invites Q to the park to practice drawing, and Toey shows up with Chain. Q asks why Toey Chain is accompanying Toey, and Pheem tells him they are at the talking stage, and Chain comes to drop him off. As they had guessed, Q reacted to the news by drawing somewhere else alone.
Phum had asked Pheem to send him his location, so he showed up at the park to keep Pheem company. Phum asks if Pheem has finished repainting the art piece and lies that he has not, even though he has told his aunt that he is done. Phum is happy since he will be seeing Pheem around some more.
As they sit silently, Pheem remembers Q’s advice that he has to figure out how he feels about the boy he kissed before talking about it and realises that he has feelings for Phum. At the end of the episode, Phum brings up their kiss and says he will never forget it. He leans in and kisses Pheem, and after they pull apart, he says that Pheem should not forget his kiss.
The Episode Review
This episode gives an interesting backstory to Toey and Q’s love story. In addition, it allows Pheem and Phum to express their feelings for each other uniquely, even though they have yet to become a couple officially. The different dynamics between the various couples show up, with Fang and Tan being the expressive ones. They have already confessed their feelings and are an official couple.
Phum and Pheem listen to their feelings and let them flow, allowing each other to understand them before speaking them aloud. Chain and Pun are a couple that have impeccable chemistry, and both feel something for each other, but they keep their feelings inside.
When it comes to Toey and Q, Toey is expressive and shows how he thinks about the other person, while Q is introverted. Although he feels something for Toey, he is unwilling to confess, and hopefully, the boys’ idea will get him to open up. We are halfway through this adorable, feel-good romance story, and the narrative is progressing gently.
