“You’ve got a Tall Nose, Lovely Eyes, and a Handsome Face.”
Episode 5 of We Are starts with Phum and Pheem in a car outside Pheem’s house, and they almost kiss, but Pheem’s aunt interrupts them. Pheem awkwardly exits the car, and Phum turns down the aunt’s invitation to have a drink. However, Pheem cannot help but think about the almost kiss, and the next day at school, the interactions at the restaurant make Phum smile.
During breakfast, we learn that Mick, Beer, Fang, Phum, and Toey attended the same high school. Fang invites them to attend the fine arts gallery, and Phum agrees. Beer starts questioning his interest, but he lies about wanting to support Toey.
Pheem and Q run into Toey and Mathew on their way to class. Surprisingly, Q and Toey give Mathew similar reviews on his work, which makes Mathew applaud him, saying that he is turning into another maestro like Q. On the way to class, Q takes Toey’s pencils, leaving him stranded because he has a drawing class in the afternoon.
Q sharpened Toey’s pencils during his class session and rushed to return them to Toey before his next class, which warms Toey’s heart. After class, he runs into Q at the drawing studio, thanks him for the pencils, and keeps him company.
Phum picks up Pheem from his faculty building and takes him to his house under the guise of making him clean. They start bickering when Pheem interrupts his TV session, and they fall onto each other on the sofa. Phum does not get off Pheem but instead leans in to kiss him. Phum’s friends, Beer and Mick, interrupt them again.
Pheem rushes out of the house but leaves his bag inside. He cannot go but waits for them to go. He waits at the pool until Phum finally manages to get his friends out of the house.
As soon as they are gone, Phum rushes to get Pheem, and he asks him to cook. Pheem does not know how to cook, and Phum finds his struggle amusing. He makes rice and pork stew, which is too salty, but Phum still eats it.
After cleaning up, Pheem joins Phum to watch TV but falls asleep soon after. When he wakes up, he sleeps on the sofa alone while Phum is in bed. Pheem gets angry that Phum left him on the sofa and leaves, but in retrospect, we see that Phum had stayed with him, letting him lean on his shoulder when he fell asleep, and he enjoyed it.
Q invites everyone to attend Loy Krathong Day as it is customary, and the group has to wear scotch shirts. Later in the evening, they all meet at the venue, and Pheem complains that they must wear matching outfits for the festival. Tan shows up later with his friends from engineering school: Phum, Mick, Beer, and Fang, his soon-to-be boyfriend.
The group splits up to enjoy the festival before Q’s performance. Tan drags Fang away while Pun, Mick, Chain, and Beer stick together. Q prepares for his performance, and Phum is stuck with Pheem.
Tan and Fang first buy a Krathong to float on the river. Tan takes the chance to ask Fang to be his boyfriend, and he agrees. Meanwhile, the other group runs into Chain’s friend Minnie, and Mick shows some interest in her, saying she looks lovely. Just then, another girl, Fah, calls Chain, asking about his whereabouts. He says he is at the fair with his friends, and they can hang up some other time.
Pun mentions that Chain knows almost every girl at the university, and he has met all his ex-girlfriends. Meanwhile, Phum walks around trying to buy Pheem anything they come across until they run into Toey, who drags them to the fine arts booth before the group meets up again for Q’s performance.
During the performance, Phum takes Pheem from the group, and Toey knowingly smiles when he sees them leave together. Phum takes Pheem to the fair at the temple and tells him that he does not have to be his slave for a day so they can have fun. Phum wins a buffalo doll at a game and gives it to Pheem, saying it looks like him. Phum calls Pheem’s name for the first time, saying that he is so demanding, and he zones out, replaying the sound of his voice.
Elsewhere, the friends gather up to congratulate Q after his performance, and when they start questioning Pheem’s whereabouts, Toey brings up wanting to float a Krathong to divert their attention. However, apart from Q, everyone in the group has already done it, so he is the only one who can accompany Toey since he does not want to do it alone. Toey has no money to buy a Krathong, so he asks Q to share his.
Pheem and Phum also want to float a Krathong, but only one beautiful one is left. Phum is faster in getting the money, so he gets the beautiful Krathong while the seller makes Pheem a simple one made of a banana trunk and flowers. As they wait, Pheem complains about how Phum, someone with a terrible personality, always ends up with the good things. Phum wants to understand his terrible personality, and Pheem explains that he is mean and power crazy, and only a heartless person would say that they want to be kind for a day.
Phum walks closer to Pheem and suddenly asks him, what do I have feelings in my heart? His question makes Pheem speechless, and the only sound he hears is his pounding heart. He composes himself, agreeing that Phum must have feelings in his heart, or he will die as the seller returns with his Krathong.
Pheem wants to buy some sparklers, but Phum is again swift to make payment, and they head out to the river to float the Krathong. They start playing with the sparklers after floating the Krathong, and Phum later drives Pheem back to the university. He has to work through the night to catch up on his assignment. Phum wants to accompany him, but Pheem says he is okay since many of his peers at the faculty are catching up on work.
Phum thanks Pheem for a beautiful day, saying he has never done something like that before. Phum’s parents cannot make time for him, and Beer and Fang only spend some time with him. When he thanks him, Pheem’s heart keeps pounding fast, and he acts according to his feelings, leans in, and kisses Phum, who kisses him back with equal intensity.
The Episode Review
This episode is a total treat, and the whole cast delivered it. The series has a simple storyline about a group of friends meeting and falling in love, which is a welcome relief. There is no anxiety about mysteries and suspense; it is just a feel-good story about a boy’s love romance amid busy university coursework.
The episode confirms the blossoming of one love story between Fang and Tan while bringing us closer to another between Pheem and Phum. Unlike the former, who starts by making their dating official, the latter begins with sweet kisses following their feelings before deciding whether to become a couple.
Meanwhile, Toey continues to give us goosebumps, acting all cute, and we are mesmerised every time he appears on screen.
