Going Overboard
Episode 8 of Virgin River season 6 starts with Mel telling Jack that Vernon is uninvited to their wedding. Jack is shocked and tries to talk to her, but she refuses to reason with him. She heads to the boat where their rehearsal dinner will be held and learns that the pork in the fridge got spoilt due to a power outage.
Thankfully, Preacher recruits Kaia and his waitress at the restaurant to help get ingredients for a new menu.
At the barn, Hope rallies everyone to get everything ready. Jack drops by to ask for her help with the Vernon-Mel war. He gives her permission to meddle, and they come up with a plan. Jack visits Vernon and acts like Mel sent him to apologise, while Hope does the same with Mel. However, both Mel and Vernon figure out their play and refuse to cease fire.
Elsewhere, Brie asks Mike to move in with her, and he agrees. On the other hand, Brady visits Jimmy and informs him that he is dating Lark and will look after Hazel. This sends Jimmy into a rage. Later, Lark shows him the little garage she leased to help him start his dream. They promise to work on their trust issues.
After fighting for days, Lizzie and Denny find common ground about what to do with their daughter. They agree to test her after they get to know her. Muriel breaks the news of her diagnosis to the ladies, and they promise to be there for each other.
As the wedding preparations heat up, Joey arrives and finally meets Everett. Meanwhile, Jack and Hope switch to a different plan to fix the situation between Mel and Vernon. Things come to a head when they trick Vernon into attending the rehearsals. Hope forces Mel and Vernon to talk, and Mel expresses her disappointment in Vernon’s actions.
She was hoping to have two dads at her wedding, but it looks like she will only have one. She calls out Everett and Vernon for refusing to tell her the reason behind their fight. She gets a call from Riley and leaves to help Marley.
The following day, Vernon and Everett talk about their beef. It turns out Vernon feels guilty for choosing to save Everett instead of another boy. All these years, he thought that Everett was on a drinking spree and hit a tree. However, Everett reveals he wasn’t drunk, just suicidal after losing Sarah and being refused access to Mel. With their beef finally done, the two men come to an understanding.
A few minutes before the rehearsal party at the boat starts, Vernon shows up and apologises to Mel. They agree to do better. Mel’s conversation with Riley about loving an adopted kid helps her see that she also hurt Vernon. The party wraps up well, and Jack later takes Mel to see the new house he is building for them. Brie and Mike return home and find Brie’s divorced parents hooking up.
After solving their issues, Denny takes Lizzie to the clinic to do an ultrasound. They decide to name the child after Denny’s late mother.
The episode ends with Everett finally working on the song he wrote for Sarah. He gets a heart attack, and he calls Mel for help. She and Jack hurry to help him.
The Episode Review
Why does calamity strike on the wedding eve? The writers need to give Jack and Mel a break. Hopefully, Everett doesn’t join Sarah in the other world. Mel still needs him around. This episode also revealed the truth behind Everett and Vernon’s beef. It is frustrating to think how this could have been solved years ago.
Denny and Lizzie have also come a long way. Neither of them is wrong, but they are simply dealing with things differently. Denny wants to be prepared to lessen the burden on Lizzie. However, she refuses to plan for the future while she’s already afraid of the present. Still, they find common ground because they are good parents and partners.
Even though it took them a while, they were able to communicate, express their concerns, and compromise.
