Love Story
Episode 5 of Virgin River season 6 starts with Mel waking up the following morning after her wild bachelorette. She happily enjoys the care package that Jack left in the bed to help with her hangover. As soon as she wakes up, he calls to check in on her. He informs her that his dad is in town and he invited them to lunch. Mel explains she has a hiking date with Everett, but Jack suggests that she brings her dad along. In the end, Mel agrees it will be great for their dads to meet before the wedding. She invites Everett, and he agrees.
Elsewhere, Hope organises a drive-in to raise money for the wildfire relief. She realises that they are showing Love Story and tries to change the movie. She worries that the movie will stress Muriel out since someone dies of cancer in it. However, when Muriel shows up, she confesses her situation to the ladies and asks Hope not to change the movie. All the ladies embrace Muriel and promise to be there for her once her biopsy results are out.
Meanwhile, Preacher prepares for his first day of community service as a volunteer at the fire station. This means he will be working under Kaia. However, he comes across the fire station douchebag, Roy. Roy is pissed that Kaia, an outsider, got the fire chief position and is irked that she is a lady. Brady cautions Preacher to stay clear of Roy. However, when Roy continues to demean Kaia, she steps in and puts him in his place since she doesn’t want Preacher to go all Mike Tyson on the guy.
At Brie’s house, she informs Mike that she will be heading to the correctional facility to meet a witness. She ignores a call from Brady and continues to get ready. Mike gets a call and leaves for work. Brie calls Brady and apologises for the voicemail she left him. She claims it was accidental, and he drops the matter. However, since he promised Lark full honesty, he tells her about the voicemail. This, plus his love confession, drives Lark to visit Jimmy at the correctional facility, too. While there, Brie spots her, and one of the wardens reveals that Lark is dating Jimmy, and Hazel is his daughter.
In the meantime, Mel picks up Everett and asks him to walk her down the aisle. He awkwardly agrees, and they head out for lunch. Everett continues to act weird during the lunch date. He also rejects Mel’s request to play the song he wrote for Sarah at her wedding.
Meanwhile, Jack’s dad can’t stop talking about how amazing Mel is. He believes Mel helped Jack get back on the right path in life. This hurts Jack since he knows his dad never understood why he enlisted. Later, Jack and his dad get a suit for the wedding. Jack thanks him for it and informs him that he is leaving their grudges in the past.
Simultaneously, Mel drives Everett back and asks what is wrong. After asking multiple times, he finally answers that he is feeling overwhelmed. Mel is surprised and hurt that he feels that way.
At the clinic, Walt stops by to invite Muriel to a date at the drive-in, and she happily agrees. Vernon learns that a boy named Brody called and reported his dad unconscious after taking a bad fall. Vernon and Denny leave to help Brody and find his dad unresponsive. They call for an ambulance, but the nearest one is 30 minutes out. Vernon worries there is no time and calls a neurosurgeon from the nearest hospital. Unfortunately, the internet is spotty, and they lose contact before the doctor can talk Vernon through the procedure.
Vernon takes a risk and successfully performs a burr hole procedure. He did it before years ago. They finally get Brody’s dad to the hospital, and Vernon is touched when the neurosurgeon commends him. Brody also thanks him for saving his dad. Surprisingly, the Chief Medical Officer informs Vernon that he is reporting him to the board for performing the procedure without qualification, consent, and supervision from a qualified neurosurgeon.
Vernon goes home and gets ready for the drive-in. Hope assures him that it will be fine and they shouldn’t let the doctor ruin their day. On the other side of the field, Kaia thanks Preacher for pushing her to finally put Roy in his place. In their corner, Jack confesses that his dad’s words hurt his feelings, and Mel asks him to give his dad a benefit of doubt. They wonder what kind of parents they will be and talk about how excited they are to adopt a baby.
At the restaurant, Brady closes up, ready to leave for the drive-in. Brie shows though and drops the bombshell truth about Lark. Brady is hurt and tries to kick her out. She waits for him to calm down before speaking again. Brady starts going off about how Lark’s betrayal is his karma, but Brie tells him that she was the one at fault for making him question if he is worthy of love. She goes on to say that she knows better now, and he deserves all the love. In turn, he says that everything he knows about love came from her.
They get all hot and heavy as they comfort each other and start kissing. One kiss leads to another, and they end up sleeping together. The scene cuts to Lark dumping Jimmy again over the phone. She is convinced Brady loves her.
After the movie wraps up, Vernon spots Everett looking for Mel. Everett explains he is ready to tell Mel the truth, and Vernon responds that it is about time. He reveals that he will never like Everett because he caused a boy’s death.
The Episode Review
The plot thickens as we learn why Vernon hates Everett. The truth about Lark comes out, and Brie and Brady give in to their feelings. Lark had so many chances to tell Brady the truth, but didn’t. This is a classic case of too little, too late. That said, Brady should have broken up with her first before sleeping with Brie. There is also the complication of Brie being in a relationship with Mike. Not to mention that Mike and Brady are friends and just made up a few days ago. Mike will be hurt when he realises what they did behind his back.
As for Vernon, the Chief Medical Officer has a valid reason to be concerned. Vernon performed a risky procedure without following protocol. Yes, he saved a life, but what if things went wrong? At the same time, was he supposed to sit back and watch Brody’s father die? It is quite a dilemma! He is damned either way. At least he saved a life.
Let us jump to the next episode and see if Everett confesses. How did he cause a boy’s death?
