Asuka Returns / A Stormy Date: Part 1
Episode 14 of Urusei Yatsura Season 2 begins with Tobimaro having a risque and amusing confrontation with his sister Asuka at their family’s estate. Later, Tobimaro explains to Asuka why it’s not right for blood relatives to sleep and bathe in the same areas together. He tells her that she should consider partaking in those excursions with people she’s in love with.
Unfortunately, Asuka doesn’t understand Tobimaro’s words and reiterates her love for him. Fortunately, their mother arrives and has a way to help Asuka. Then, we see Asuka sitting on a tree at Tomobiki High School. She’s observing the male students’ baseball game. Next, we enter a flashback, involving Asuka and her mother.
Asuka’s mother wants her to deliver something to Mendo. Asuka’s afraid because she doesn’t want to interact with other men, besides Tobimaro. However, her mother persuades her to progress with this errand. Then, Asuka tries searching for Mendo in the present but fails to interact with a few girls because she’s wearing her knight outfit.
The girls leave and grab Onsen-Mark and a few male students. Asuka swipes Onsen and the others away with her immense strength and yelps. Mendo, Ataru, and others of the main cast hear Asuka’s screams and investigate. A hilarious chase sequence occurs between several men and Asuka. Eventually, Asuka leaps into the school building and encounters Ryonosuke.
The two have a brief dramatic staredown. But like the other men, Asuka pushes Ryonosuke aside and flees. Ryonosuke chases after Asuka because of her rude greeting. Eventually, Mendo, Lum, Ataru, and Ryonosuke get close to Asuka. Asuka throws Mendo the item her mother wants her to give to him. Mendo opens it up. He learns Asuka’s mother entrusts Mendo to help Asuka break free from her androphobia.
Lum finds Asuka and the two hide underneath Kotatsu’s kotatsu. Asuka tells Lum that her mother sent her here to deliver the item to Mendo and to find the “perfect man.” Then, Ryonosuke finds the two and attempts to convince Asuka that she’s a woman. Asuka uses the kotatsu to hurt Ryonosuke and flees. Ryonosuke chases after Asuka again.
While chasing Asuka, she tries flashing her to prove that she’s a woman. However, Asuka isn’t willing to accept Ryonosuke’s gender and hops into a vacant tree to hide. In the tree, Asuka contemplates what her mother and brother would tell her to do in this situation. Then, her mother and Tobimaro appear beside her (out of the blue).
Asuka tells her mother that Ryonosuke left a decent impression on her. Her mother feels Ryonosuke could be the “perfect man” she was alluding to earlier. After a humorous conversation ensues involving human chests, Asuka’s mother pushes Asuka off the tree. Mendo and the others notice Asuka. Asuka asks Ryonosuke if she can lay on her chest and Ryonosuke says she can.
However, Ataru intervenes. Asuka removes Ataru from Ryonosuke via the tree behind them. Then, she approaches Ryonosuke again, but Ryonsuke flees because she’s afraid of Asuka’s immense strength. Meanwhile, Mendo climbs up the tree and informs Asuka’s mother and Tobimaro that Ryonosuke is a girl. Simultaneously, Asuka grabs Ryonosuke, and the two plummet through the school’s wall and enter its gym.
Asuka realizes something strange regarding Ryonosuke. Her mother and the others arrive. Although Ryonosuke thinks Asuka believes she’s a woman, Asuka tells Ryonosuke that she thinks she’s another brother of hers. She compares her chest size to Tobimaro’s, angering Ryonosuke. The segment closes with Ryonosuke and Asuka interrogating Asuka’s mother.
The next story segment begins with Tobimaro waking up and realizing Asuka’s in his bed. Suddenly, Asuka’s mother enters the room and scolds Tobimaro for luring his sister into his bed. Tobimaro and his mother argue over the matter. This entices his mother to head to the Mendo Family Estate to speak with Mendo. There, she asks Mendo to go on a date with Asuka since he’s the only man she doesn’t fear.
Ataru arrives and says he’d like to go on the date. Ryoko arrives and tells Mendo that she invited Ataru over. Lum arrives too because she doesn’t want Ataru to get involved. Ryoko tells Mendo she doesn’t want him to be romantically involved with another woman. This results in the two fighting. Asuka’s mother envies Ryoko and Mendo’s relationship.
Nonetheless, Mendo tells Asuka’s mother that he won’t fail the mission. Asuka’s mother returns home, informing Tobimaro and Asuka of the deal she made with Mendo. Although Tobimaro’s not happy with this news, Asuka complies.
On date day, Mendo has his guards dress up in costumes because Asuka’s afraid of seeing other men. Asuka and her mother arrive. She tries hugging Mendo but he dodges her. Asuka grabs one of his family’s heirlooms, demonstrating her immense strength. Ryoko monitors the two from afar, fearful for her brother’s well-being. She feels if Mendo’s going to perish, she should be the one to commit the act.
Suddenly, we see Lum. She’s dressed up as one of Asuka’s female guards. She has a hunch that Ataru will try to ruin this date and wants to prevent that from happening. Meanwhile, Asuka’s mother hopes matters will go well between Mendo and Asuka.
The episode closes with a shot of a guard tied up and Ataru putting on a disguise.
The Episode Review
It looks like Mendo’s phobia isn’t the only one this season will be exploring. This episode focuses on Mendo’s rival’s sister Asuka and her fear of men. It contains similar jokes, gags, and funny facial humor as previous episodes. This time, we get to see Asuka interact with Ryonosuke, which was fun for fans who wanted to see how an interaction between this duo would go.
Besides an endless array of comical moments, nothing truly grand comes out of that, besides Asuka being less fearful of Ryonosuke. The same can be said for the second segment. The second segment makes the first one feel obsolete in retrospect. Hopefully, we’ll receive a solid result from “A Stormy Date: Part 2.” However, we’re certain that the same comical mischief will ensue and the running gag with Asuka will remain.
Nonetheless, we’re optimistic that episode 15 will prove us wrong and give us marvelous development for Asuka. This’d be in Urusei Yatsura’s best interest, considering the previous episode didn’t deliver the best resolution to Mendo’s phobia and its origins. Overall, this was an okay episode of Urusei Yatsura Season 2.
While most of the content in this one feels repetitive, fans will enjoy the comedy and interactions stored within it the most.
