What Happened In Episode 9?

Urusei Yatsura Season 2 Episode 9 was split into two story segments. The first set piece continues following Shinobu, Ataru, Lum, and Inaba through hyperspace. The four arrive at a post-apocalyptic future and find its atmosphere unappealing. They return to hyperspace and Lum confronts Ataru about their future together.

Sensing the tension in the air, Inaba takes everyone to the Factory of Fate. At this factory, Inaba crafts a doorknob and says with it, he’ll be able to visit his ideal future. He entices Lum, Ataru, and Shinobu to craft a doorknob. When they complete their projects, they flee the factory and visit a hyperspace with doorknob-less doors.

Before Inaba can use his doorknob, one of his friends slams the door Inaba was about to use into Inaba’s face. This causes Inaba to plummet toward the hyperspace’s depths, resulting in Shinobu leaving Lum and Ataru behind to save Inaba. Meanwhile, Lum tries to use her doorknob but Inaba’s friends cause her to drop her doorknob, resulting in it getting destroyed.

Ataru uses the commotion to enter his harem-themed future. While he’s satisfied with it at first, he’s disgusted by his future self’s actions toward Lum. Ataru abandons this future and Lum chases after Ataru through hyperspace. Meanwhile, Shinobu and Inaba find themselves in Shinobu’s ideal future.

Shinobu’s unsure about its contents, but she tells Inaba she wants there to be a future where everything will remain the same. Back in hyperspace, Lum and Ataru stop their cat-and-mouse shenanigans briefly. Ataru says he’s not interested in marrying Lum because he doesn’t like her attitude. Before Lum could respond, Inaba’s friends place a large door in front of them.

During this commotion, Inaba and Shinobu return to hyperspace. Inaba’s friends inform the four that they plan to obliterate all these future realms and replace them with new ones. This causes the current doors to plummet toward the ground. Although Ataru’s not against the idea, one of the doors hits him. This results in Ataru accidentally entering that door.

In it, he arrives in a future timeline where he and Lum are happily married to each other. Lum takes a peak inside the door and realizes this is the future she hoped for. After seeing how happy Future Lum is in this world, Ataru departs from this realm and tries to save the door. Ataru and the door plummet toward a pile of other magic doors.

Inaba and the others regroup with Ataru. During this time, Inaba removes one of the doorknobs and tells Shinobu, Lum, and Ataru to head for the final magic door nearby. This door will lead them home. When Ataru, Lum, and Shinobu enter the door, Inaba sacrifices himself. However, he hopes he’ll be able to have tea with Shinobu someday.

The next scene cuts to him having tea with Shinobu and the others. Although Shinobu’s upset that she cried for nothing, the segment closes with her smiling. The final set piece follows Onsen-Mark, who is still in bandages because of the events that took place during his encounter with Mendo’s family.

Although he’ll be visiting Shinobu’s home next, he feels Shinobu and her family will welcome them with comforting arms. Unfortunately, things don’t go according to plan for Onsen. Ultimately, Shinobu slams the door in his face, causing Onsen to soar through the skies. The episode closes with the showrunners stating Onsen will be visiting Ataru’s home in a future episode.
