Undead Unluck – Season 1 Episode 21 Recap & Review

Memento Mori

Episode 21 of Undead Unluck begins with Fuko marveling over the long stack of books Andy’s turned into. Anno explains Andy’s stack of books is long because most of them represent Victor’s memories. Then, Anno uses the artifact Soul Caliber on Fuko. He says this artifact allows him to pluck out people’s souls from their bodies so he can place those souls in physical objects.

By placing Fuko inside Andy’s memories, he hopes the two will learn about themselves and understand each other better. Fuko finds herself in a desert. A cowboy arrives and confronts her. Fuko promises the fellow in English that she means him no harm. Before the cowboy shoots her, Andy saves her. Andy argues with his co-worker about not saving all the kids.

During this time, Fuko marvels at the sight of Andy. Andy’s colleagues find Fuko problematic and want to dispose of her. Fuko attempts to gain Andy’s trust by mentioning his tattoos. Fuko’s plans work and Andy invites her to eat with him and his colleagues. Andy and the others arrive at a parlor and have many drinks.

Once the hilarity ends, Fuko confronts Andy and the others about their activities here. Andy confirms this timeline is set sometime after the Civil War. Due to the war’s effects on people, Andy says he and his allies spend their lives defeating bad guys and getting rewarded for their heroic efforts.

However, his female partner, Josh, says Andy roams the world because he wants to learn something about his past. Andy asks Fuko how he knows about his tattoos. Fuko says the Andy she knows likes getting naked in front of her, which triggers Josh and the others. Realizing anything she says will make Josh and the others bat an eye, Fuko asks Andy if she can join his crew.

She wants to gain Andy’s trust, get stronger, and learn more about him. Andy hands Fuko a gun and asks her to point it toward her head and fire. Fuko fires the gun several times and Josh stops her. Fuko tells Josh that she knew Andy didn’t load the weapon because he’s someone who doesn’t like to harm specific fighters.

Josh finds Fuko’s comments strange but suggests that the others let her join their crew. Suddenly, multiple people start firing gunshots at Andy and the others. The men who fired at them confirm this was a set-up orchestrated between them and the Saloon worker. The Saloon worker hoped that by letting these men kill Andy and the others, they’d leave the kids alone.

Before Josh passes away, she asks Fuko if Future Andy is alive and well. Fuko confirms he is. Past Andy gets up, grabs his comrade Sander’s weapons, and starts murdering the cowboys who shot at his crew. Fuko realizes she’ll likely have to witness all of Andy’s horrid experiences soon. Later, Fuko assists Andy in burying Sanders, Red, and Josh.

The Saloon worker apologizes to Andy for her role in the cowboys’ plan. She asks Andy to let her atone for what she has done but to forgive everyone else. Andy approaches the woman and asks her to pour booze on his comrades’ graves every year and on this day. He wants her to do this for the remainder of her life, and by doing so, his former comrades won’t blame her for what she did.

The two head off somewhere, and Andy tells Fuko he wants the Saloon worker to suffer. Nonetheless, Fuko joins Andy’s crew and reflects on their experiences together. During this montage, Fuko claims they’ve met and lost many allies, and never once did Andy smile. At a different eatery, Fuko welcomes the latest recruits by giving them mild Unluck.

She leaves with a plate of beverages and delivers it to Andy. The two discuss their recruits briefly. Then, Andy and Fuko discuss what death entails concerning their diverse experiences with it. Fuko shares encouraging words with Andy and praises him for smiling. Andy shares intel about his oldest memory with Fuko.

He gives her the date and location and wonders if she’ll be heading there next. As Fuko fades away, she informs Andy about their future meeting. She tells him what he should do for her when he sees her. After Fuko fades away, Andy reflects on Fuko’s remarks on death and loves the thought that no one truly dies unless you forget them.

Then, Fuko questions why she’s in front of a large building. The episode closes with the showrunners informing the audience that Fuko’s arrived at the place Andy told her about regarding his oldest memory.

The Episode Review

Considering where things are heading, it appears we’ll be closing this season with a deep dive into Andy and Victor’s past lives. Since there is so little we know of the two, many people will appreciate this story’s shift in direction. Hopefully, we’ll receive news of a continuation happening for it down the pipeline, too.

Nonetheless, this episode carried some emotional baggage. Although the episode doesn’t delve too much into Josh, Sanders, and Red’s characters, it was unfortunate to see them perish by the cowboy’s firearms. Although Josh received minimal screen time in this chapter, many folks may sympathize with her more than Sanders and Red.

Regarding death, it was touching to see Fuko discuss death in a meaningful way with Andy’s past counterpart. Her notion of it is something many viewers can get behind and respect. Overall, this was a wonderful chapter of Undead Unluck. While there were matters that could’ve been touched upon further, what it provides should pique many folks’ curiosity. I’m excited to see what Fuko discovers about her Undead ally next.
