Undead Unluck – Season 1 Episode 17 Recap & Review

Outsmart

Episode 17 of Undead Unluck begins where we left off in episode sixteen with Billy and his allies attempting to flee with the Union’s Roundtable. Billy tells Unrepair not to underestimate the Union. Unrepair tells Billy that “killing god” is the only thing his organization (Under) desires. However, Unrepair tells Billy that he and Latla will cooperate with him.

Billy states he’s willing to comply. Then, we receive the same sequence from episode sixteen, where Juiz gives everyone affiliated with the Union different orders. Then, we see everyone performing those tasks from Nico to Andy. Fuko tells Andy that she wants to stop Burn and talk things out with Billy.

While dodging several attacks from Burn, Andy tells Fuko he wants to interrogate Billy. He argues Billy and Unrepair have different goals in mind, and feels Billy can accomplish his goal easier by siding with the Union. Before talking things out, Andy suggests they give Billy a thrashing for Tatiana’s sake and Fuko agrees.

Fuko and Andy confront Billy. Fuko kisses Andy while beheading him, signaling to Unrepair that a stroke of unluck is heading Andy’s way. Andy uses his Parts-Bullet Head attack and heads straight into Burn’s mouth and reaches the beast’s stomach. Burn gets hit with electricity due to several electromagnetic cables misfiring.

Then, Mico initiates the Union’s lab cooling system to freeze Burn in his tracks. Billy says their efforts are futile but Fuko believes her unluck powers and the Union’s Unbreakable Pile Cannon will assist her and allies in their endeavors. Mico activates the Unbreakable Pile Cannon and the cannon thwarts Burn’s movement. While the Union members celebrate, Chikara informs Juiz that Tatiana’s gone.

Andy attacks Billy, but Billy recovers and obtains Andy’s undead powers. Unrepair tells Latla they don’t need to get involved in their squabble. Billy and Andy continue fighting. Although both are on equal footing, Billy uses Juiz’s abilities to make Fuko lose her balance and fall. While Andy successfully retrieves Fuko, he realizes Billy’s ability allows him to copy other’s powers.

Billy tells Burn to wake up so Burn unfreezes himself with his fire abilities and removes the cannon from his chest. Mico and her lab companions realize they failed to pierce Burn’s core with the cannon. Juiz tells Mico to remain calm, despite her telling Juiz that they have five minutes left before Under can flee the base.

Simultaneously, Tatiana tells Juiz she recovered Andy and Fuko. Juiz’s slightly irritated that Tatiana didn’t follow orders, but Tatiana tells Juiz she wants to chat with Billy. Juiz asks Tatiana if she still holds feelings for Billy since their operation’s success depends on her answer. Burn manages to break out of the Union base, but Tatiana and the others manage to thwart his and the Under’s movements.

Tatiana uses this opportunity to interrogate Billy about his betrayal. Billy tells Tatiana that he’s not willing to back down, so Tatiana unleashes her powers to forcefully push him into Burn. Fuko grabs Apocalypse and Andy states why they went after Apocalypse. Despite having the upper hand, Apocalypse injects Fuko with terrible memories, causing her to let him go.

Before Apocalypse flees, Phil grabs Apocalypse with his rock arm. Andy tells Phil to pick up Fuko so he can confront Billy. Billy tells Andy that he’ll let the Union borrow Apocalypse but he plans to retrieve him before the new quests’ deadline. However, he wants Andy to inform Juiz that Under won’t be relinquishing “Ark” to them, puzzling Andy and the others.

Billy and the others escape. Juiz tells Andy not to pursue them and asks for him and the other Union members to reconvene at HQ. The episode closes with Andy complying with Juiz’s orders.

The Episode Review

Episode 17 flew by like a breeze in the wind. Despite having an unnecessary recap section and not delving too deep into Billy’s copying capabilities, this chapter had appealing action. From Andy’s squabble with Billy to the horrid imagery Fuko received from Apocalypse’s ability, fans will appreciate David Productions’s efforts in giving them a stunning chapter to watch this week.

Additionally, this episode had its share of issues many can’t ignore. For example, the recap portion, while helpful for some, felt unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. While it flew naturally with the content inserted in episode seventeen, it’d been wiser if the animation studio hadn’t included it in episode sixteen.

Moreover, Billy’s copying abilities aren’t explained well enough. While it serves as an impressive display of strength on his part, the episode could’ve provided viewers with more information on his power’s limitations. Nonetheless, the scenes involving him, Under, and Tatiana were satisfying to the eye. Further, it’s interesting that he and the other Under members didn’t meet until now.

It’ll make you wonder if Billy will flip the script and rejoin the Union down the pipeline. Overall, this was a fun episode of Undead Unluck. It had some issues, but fans will find most of its content gratifying.
