Umjolo: The Gone Girl (2024) Ending Explained – Is Lucky the Perfect Man For Lethu?

Umjolo: The Gone Girl Plot Summary

This is a South African rom-com directed by Fikile Mogodi, starring Shezi Sibongiseni as Lethu and Tyson Mathonsi as Lucky. From the inside looking in, Lethu and Lucky look like the perfect couple. They are #goals and are super supportive of each other.

However, Lethu soon discovers that Lucky is not the prince charming he parades himself to be. Throughout their relationship, Lethu thought herself lucky, unlike her sister-in-law, Bridget, who is married to the philanderer, Themba. However, when Lethu gets an STI, she realises that Lucky is a silent killer. A better player than his brother, and this rocks her world.

Does Lethu forgive Lucky?

After coming from the hospital, Lethu confronts Lucky, and he admits to cheating. He profusely apologises, saying he slept with only one girl once and it was a mistake. A slip-up that he promises will never happen again. He argues that it is not worth destroying their relationship and engagement over it. Lethu takes time to think about it and they go to sleep.

That night, Lucky’s phone won’t stay quiet as messages from over 15 girls come in. All his lovers are either angry or sad that he gave them chlamydia. Lethu is shocked when she sees all these messages. She wakes Lucky up and angrily confronts him again. A few days later, Lethu demands the truth from Lucky. He tells her that he can’t spend forever sleeping with one partner. Though he loves her, he needs to sleep with other women. Lethu is beyond hurt and shuttered.

She breaks off the engagement and leaves for the village to spend time with her granny and think about everything. Ever since she discovered Lucky’s lovers, she has been unable to focus and is on the verge of losing her biggest client, The Jamas. Lethu is an event organiser, and she needs to bring her A-game for this one.

After a few days of crying on her grandma’s shoulder, Lethu gets herself together. Her grandma advises her not to dump Lucky because he loves her and all men cheat. Lethu heads back home with a new proposition for Lucky.

What is Lethu’s new proposition?

Lethu returns home to find Lucky grieving over her. For the past few days, Lucky has been reflecting and has decided to get Lethu back. His brother, Themba, advises him to stop playing around. Apparently, Themba has seen the light and repented. He is no longer out there chasing women.

The recent changes in him surprise everyone. They think that the beating he got from some schoolboys forced him to change his ways. He encourages Lucky to do the same and reduce the stress cheating brings in his life.

However, when Lethu returns, she proclaims she is down with an open relationship. If Lucky can sleep around, then she deserves the same courtesy. Lucky begrudgingly agrees, and they come up with two rules. They agree to the respectful and not sleep with people they know.

Does the open relationship work?

At first, Lethu tells her friends that she can handle it, but she can’t. She later confides in Amanda, her best friend and assistant, that she is not happy with the situation. However, after a few weeks, Lethu realises that it is not all bad. The open relationship is giving her time to do things she used to like. She gets back to dancing and enjoying her company.

Before, Lucky never let her be herself, go out or have some hobbies. She even tried to date but was unable to sleep with the other guy.

On the other hand, Lucky continues sleeping around. To make matters worse, he is also in an on-and-off situationship with Amanda. Surprisingly, he dares to slut shame Lethu when he finds a delivery man doing his job at their house.

How does Umjolo: Gone Girl End?

With more time to herself, Lethu brings her best efforts to the Jama wedding. At the wedding, she finds Lucky sleeping with Amanda and it finally dawns on her that he is nothing but a cheating man with a big ego. At this point, she is so done to even get angry or cry. She wishes the two the best and fires Amanda. She returns the engagement ring and heads back to the party.

She ends up having the time of her life dancing the night away. In the meantime, Themba continues cheating on his wife. I guess a leopard never changes its spots, right?
