The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol – Season 2 Episode 6 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

Episode 6

Episode 6 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol (Season 2) begins with Laurent and Daryl having a bittersweet realisation as the latter decides to stay back. Daryl promises to see him soon but Laurent has a bad feeling. Daryl finds a guitar and gives it to Laurent who was taught 70s rock songs by Pere Jean. They sing ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ by The Rolling Stones together.

In the shed, Ash wonders why he should help them. Carol begs him not to take out his anger on Laurent and Daryl and reveals that she will be staying behind.

What is Jacinta up to?

The Rooftop group goes out on a supply run and it includes Fallou, Codron and a farmer, Akila. Fallou and Akila bond over their missing family and Codron teases him. They look for medicine in an asylum and Codron finds a cross on a walker which he takes.

Fallou and Codron are accosted by Sabine’s team who are looking for Laurent. The men find it pointless but Sabine believes the cause is not dead as Jacinta will fulfil it. Akila rescues them and they rush to the shed to warn Daryl.

Elsewhere, Anna is out on a drive and wonders about her mom back home in Karelia. They are suddenly surrounded by Jacinta’s team. Anna is not deterred even when Jacinta threatens to kill her if she doesn’t tell them Laurent’s location. Seeing that Anna is their only lead, Jacinta offers a trade. A homesick Anna seizes her chance – she wants the plane in exchange for the location.

She takes them to the racetrack where she sees a poster of the Eiffel Tower. She recalls her time with Laurent and changes her mind. She leads the Guerriers to the basement which is filled with burners. Jacinta is bitten but she escapes in time and locks Anna in. Anna claims Daryl will kill them all before she is taken down by the burners. The Guerriers hear the sound of the plane engine and rush to find it.

Who leaves on the plane?

At the plane shed, Laurent comforts Carol who feels guilty about lying to Ash. He is glad she lied but wonders if Daryl can make it home alone which surprises her.

At the same time, Ash and Daryl are scavenging for parts. Ash is still upset and Daryl points out that he came to save a kid and he still can. He saves Ash from a walker and the pilot is glad Daryl is coming with them which, of course, surprises Daryl.

As they regroup at the shed, Carol gives Daryl his crossbow. They end up bickering as they realise the other wants to stay. In the end, Daryl wins as Ash teams up with him and claims it will be better if Carol is on the plane. Fallou, Akila and Codron show up and warn them about the Guerriers.

The Guerriers arrive and Daryl has a hasty farewell with Carol and Laurent as they get into the plane. Fallou, Codron, Akila and Daryl cover for them but Ash isn’t able to lift off the plane. Carol asks if they are good and Ash says yes.

A biker goes after the plane and Daryl kills him. However, a jeep comes from the front and Daryl frets as he needs to reload the rifle. It is almost touch and go but Ash takes off in time. He celebrates with Laurent and we see that it is just the two of them in the plane.

Carol is beside Daryl and is the one who killed the jeep driver. They wave at Laurent who waves back. The fighting stops and a disheartened Jacinta kills herself.

What does Daryl’s group decide to do next?

Fallou knows a Scottish couple, Fiona and Angus heading to England and the group decides to accompany them. As they have dinner, they talk about their lives at the onset of the apocalypse. Fallou recalls a racist couple begging for his help and this makes Akila sad. She kisses him and reveals that she will be staying back to look for her sister, Djamila.

Nearby, Codron is sorry about Isabelle and bonds with Daryl over losing a loved one. Codron recalls killing his brother, Michel when he turned and how he lost a part of him. He wants to know how Michel died and Daryl finally reveals the truth – it was the girl and the fake blind man. Codron is upset that everything he did to avenge his brother was pointless.

While Codron grieves, Daryl comforts Carol who cannot seem to get over Sophia. She is upset that she can only remember Walker Sophia and cries over the lost kids of their group. Daryl hugs her and assures her it is not her fault.

The next day, the group arrives at the entrance of the underwater tunnel – the Chunnel. Fallou decides to stay back with Akila and Codron is amused. Fallou wishes Daryl in French who is surprised that he understood.

What happens in the Chunnel?

The group – now consisting of Fiona, Angus, Codron, Daryl and Carol – enter the Chunnel. They find bat guano which is psychoactive followed by the first checkpoint. They are surprised to see that the guards have killed themselves and there are broken masks.

As they continue, the Chunnel is covered in bioluminescence which has created glowing walkers. Everyone feels dizzy and Angus falls, attracting the walkers. The group starts hallucinating courtesy of the guano as they pick off the walkers. Carol sees Walker Sophia and follows her while Codron sees his brother in a walker. Daryl kills it but Codron attacks him as he thinks the former has killed his brother. Codron stabs him but sees Michel again and runs after him.

Daryl rushes to the checkpoint to take a mask but Angus knocks him out. Turns out, there are only 2 working masks left. Daryl sees Isabelle who tells him that it is not the end like it was for his ancestor who died on French soil. She tells him to bet on hope and he finally comes to. He attacks the Scottish couple just as they are about to kill him. He kills them and takes the masks. Isabelle wishes him well and leaves.

As for Carol, she is surrounded by walkers. She takes out all of them but the last one is herself as a walker. She hesitates and Walker Carol disappears, replaced by Human Sophia. Carol hugs her and wishes to join her but the girl refuses. She walks away and Carol smiles.

Carol makes it back to the checkpoint and takes the mask from Daryl. They accept Codron’s fate and decide to head home. At the end of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol Episode 6, they make their way further into the Chunnel.

The Episode Review

And with The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol Episode 6, Season 2 of this exciting spin-off comes to an end. In classic TWD fashion, we get all the works from cool action and walker gore to betrayals upon betrayals and angst. How cool are the glowing walkers, by the way?

While it seems it is Daryl who is being left behind, it is actually Laurent who is all alone. At least Daryl has people in France while Laurent is being taken to a strange land with a stranger who is not exactly on good terms with his friends. But seeing that this will probably be the last that see of Ash, even that brief moment of him acknowledging Carol’s sacrifice is enough to close his chapter.

Overall, the racetrack sequence was fun with the high stakes and everyone rushing to get to the plane for different reasons. It is also kind of funny how over the 12 episodes, this is the first time all the (remaining) characters are in the same place including minor characters like Ash, Anna and Codron.

Not gonna lie, we expected the Losang/Genet/Laurent showdown to be the finale but somehow it makes sense to end it with the Chunnel. It ends on a high note, ties up all loose ends yet sets up enough for the next season.

It gives closure to Isabelle and Daryl’s adventure in France, Carol’s struggle to get over her daughter, and ends Codron’s story with his inability to get over his brother’s death. With the next chapter being set in Spain, we will truly be surprised to see him, Ash, Fallou or Laurent in Season 3 but never say never.
