Where is Rosa Hill now?

From the creators of the Netflix documentary series Worst Roommate Ever comes Worst Ex Ever, a true crime docuseries that recounts the stories of various individuals who suffered at the hands of their partner.

Episode 3 of Worst Ex Ever shines a chilling spotlight on a woman named Rosa Hill.

The synopsis for the episode reads:

“A long custody battle turns Eric into the target of a malicious scheme by his ex-wife, Rosa, and her mother. Caught in the crossfire: Eric’s grandmother.”

In this article, we take a brief look at this true crime case and ask the question: Where is Rosa Hill now?

What did Rosa Hill do?

In the documentary, we meet a man named Eric Hill from Almeda, California, who, in 2002, was invited by his colleague Mai to go on a hike with her and some of the other coworkers from the social services department where they worked.

On the hike, Mei introduced Eric to her daughter Rosa. The two became friendly and in the following months, they started to date one another.

Eric loved Rosa but she wasn’t held in high esteem by his father and his friend who were creeped out by Rosa’s odd behaviour. At times, she would respond to their questions by whispering her answers in Eric’s ear. She would also listen in on his phone calls.

Despite their reservations, Eric asked Rosa to marry him on Valentine’s Day in 2004. Unfortunately for him, she said yes!

They got married in April 2005 and then went on a honeymoon to Hawaii. It’s here where their relationship took a downward turn, as they started to bicker a lot during their vacation. During one argument, Rosa even tried to hit Eric but thankfully missed.

Many of their arguments were about money. Eric was deep in debt because of the wedding and honeymoon, a situation that wasn’t helped because Rosa wasn’t working.

Eventually, Rosa forced Eric to pull away from his family because she was jealous of his relationships. In June 2006, they began a family of their own when Rosa gave birth to a baby girl. This should have been a happy time for them both, but their fights escalated. Eventually, Rosa took their daughter and moved in with her mother.

By March 2007, Eric and Rosa had separated. Unfortunately for Eric, Rosa had control of all their assets, including the house and bank accounts. As a consequence, he found himself without a home. Thankfully, he had a loving grandmother, Sally, who welcomed him into her house with open arms.

In June 2007, Eric was given 50% custody of his daughter. Rosa wasn’t happy about this and lied to the police, telling them that Eric had sexually abused his daughter.

Fortunately, the police could see through Rosa’s lies. Her plan to remove Eric’s custody rights backfired so rather than lose access to his daughter, he was given 100% legal custody of her.

The next couple of years were good for Eric as he, his daughter, and his gran, lived happily together. Sadly, events took a tragic turn in the January of 2009. Sally’s boyfriend Lester called her at home but failed to receive an answer. Worried by this, he called his son and daughter-in-law and asked them to do a welfare check on her. They arrived at the house at the same time as Eric and remained downstairs while Eric looked for his grandmother.

Eric checked his gran’s bedroom but didn’t find her. However, he wasn’t alone upstairs as Rosa and Mei were lying in wait for him. They attacked Eric with a baton and a taser and threatened to kill him unless he gave up custody of his daughter. Afraid for his life, Eric agreed to their demand.

Fortunately, the police, who had been alerted by Lester’s son, who thought he had heard a gunshot, arrived on the scene. As they were unsure as to what was going on, the police placed all three of them in custody. But it wasn’t long before they realised Rosa and Mei were guilty of Eric’s attempted murder.

What happened to Rosa Hill?

During the police investigation, it was discovered that Rosa and Mei had strangled Eric’s grandmother to death. The pair had then dumped her body headfirst into a garbage can.

The police found evidence in Mei’s home that she and Rosa were planning to frame Eric for the murder. Such evidence came from notes they had written which were part of their “revenge list.” Their plan was to kill Eric following the murder of Sally and to make it look like he had killed himself in guilt over what ‘he had done.’

On June 28, 2011, Rosa was found guilty of the murder of Sally and the attempted murder of Eric. She was sentenced to 25 years to life. Mei was given the same life sentence.
