What happened to Mindy Morgenstern?

On September 13, 2006, Mindy Morgenstern, a student at Valley City State University in North Dakota, was found dead in her off-campus residence in New Salem.

The 22-year-old, who was described as “caring, outgoing, and compassionate” had been violently murdered. Mindy’s friends found her body and reported her death to the police.

The autopsy revealed her death was caused by a combination of asphyxiation and deep cuts to her neck.

When investigators examined the body, they discovered the DNA under her fingernails matched that of her neighbour, Moe Gibbs.

Who is Moe Gibbs?

At the time of Mindy’s death, the then 35-year-old Moe Gibbs was a corrections officer working from the Barnes County Jail. He was living in the same apartment building as Mindy with his then-pregnant wife.

When questioned by police, Moe told police he had been with his wife at the time of Mindy’s murder. According to him, they were packing up their belongings and getting ready to move. However, this was a lie, as he had actually been in Mindy’s apartment, which is where he killed her.

At his trial, the prosecutors argued that Moe may have attempted to assault Mindy and then killed her when she fought back.

Mindy’s murder wasn’t the first crime he had committed.

Between 1994 and 1998, he had served time for attempted premeditated murder. His DNA also matched records pertaining to a brutal sexual assault that occurred in Fargo in 2004.

Furthermore, it’s reported that Moe allegedly sexually assaulted several inmates from the jail where he had been working. (source)

What happened to Moe Gibbs?

After Gibbs was arrested, he was charged with one count of first-degree murder in Mindy’s death, one count of sexual assault for the rape in 2004, and six counts of sexual assault for the crimes at the jail.

On November 20, 2007, he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
