Where is Ethan Crumbley now? | The teenage shooter featured in ‘Sins of the Parents: The Crumbley Trials’

Where is Ethan Crumbley now?

Sins of the Parents: The Crumbley Trials is a new true crime documentary airing on Hulu and Disney+.

It tells the story of Jennifer and James Crumbley, the parents of Ethan Crumbley, a former student of Oxford High School in Michigan who was responsible for a mass shooting at the school.

The gun Ethan used for his crimes was given to him by his parents. They didn’t know he was going to use it to commit murder but they were still convicted of involuntary manslaughter for their part in the murders Ethan committed. You can learn more about their culpability here

In this article, we take a brief look at this true crime case and ask the question: Where is Ethan Crumbley now?

What did Ethan Crumbley do?

On November 30, 2021, the then-15-year-old Ethan Crumbley killed four of his fellow students and injured several others at Oxford High School in Michigan.

The weapon Ethan used – which he called his “beauty” – was a 9mm semi-automatic handgun which his parents had purchased for him four days earlier as an early birthday present.

As reported here, Ethan had planned the shooting before the day the killings took place. Evidence of this was found in his journal, alongside a glimpse into his troubled mental health and home life. As per the linked article, he wrote: “”I wish to hear the screams of the children as I shoot them.”

His journal also contained entries about birds that he had tortured to death. One bird had been decapitated by him, which he then took to school, hoping that a school official might get him the help he needed for his mental health struggles.

Extracts from the journal can be found at the link provided.

Unfortunately, Ethan didn’t get the help he needed with his mental health. While it’s possible the school can be held partly responsible for this, it’s his parents who were later blamed for not recognizing the struggles he was going through.

On the day of the shooting, his parents were brought into school after teachers discovered violent messages and drawings on his schoolwork. One of Ethan’s drawings was of a wounded man and a gun, with the words “The thoughts won’t stop. Help me. My life is useless.” (Source)

Instead of taking Ethan out of school that day, his parents let him remain. At the very least, they should have told the school about the gun they had bought him after seeing the drawings. However, they neglected to do so.

At around 12.51 that day, the shootings began. Ethan killed four students – Justin Shilling, 17, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, Tate Myre, 16, and Hana St. Juliana, 14 – and injured several others, including a teacher.

What happened to Ethan Crumbley?

On December 1, 2021, Ethan was charged as an adult for the mass shooting. He was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and 19 other charges, including assault and possession of a firearm.

On December 8, 2023, Ethan was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. A few weeks later, his parents also stood trial and were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for their part in Ethan’s crimes.
