Where is Dennis Rader Now? | The true story of the BTK killer

Where is Dennis Radar Now

Dennis Rader, also known as BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill), is one of America’s most prolific and twisted serial killers. His MO included macabre torturing and an unimaginable lack of mercy. His appalling fantasies didn’t even leave out little children. What he had was worse than bloodlust and twistier than sadism.

Where was Rader from and Who did he kill?

Dennis Rader was born in Pittsburg, Kansas in 1945, however, he was raised in Wichita. Radar admitted to having sadistic sexual fantasies about torturing women to death. Voyeurism and cross-dressing would put his mind at ease as a young boy, however, as he grew his sexual fantasies dominated him and he set out for blood.

As per the records, Rader is known to have killed at least 10 people. However, many of the case investigators believe the real toll could be way higher. Although Rader generally targeted women, he would kill anyone who got in the way.

The Otero Murders

On January 15, 1974, Rader murdered four members of the Otero family – Joseph Otero (father, 38), Julie Otero (mother, 33), Joey Otero (son, 9), and Josie Otero (daughter, 11). Rader covered Joseph’s head with a plastic bag, hence suffocating him to death. He strangled Julie and then suffocated Joey to death using plastic bags and t-shirts.

Afterwards, he took Josie to the basement where he hanged her with a noose. Police later found Rader’s semen near her partially-clothed body, leading to question marks about a possibility of rape. However, this has not been confirmed.

The bodies of the Otero family were discovered by three older children of the family who had gone to school.

Taunting the Cops

Rader loved adding insult to the injuries of cops who were under great pressure to find the infamous killer of Wichita. He would often send taunting letters to police detailing his crimes and ridiculing law enforcement. He wrote a letter about the Otero murders that he stashed in one of the books of the Wichita Public Library.

It was one of those taunting messages that ultimately led to his capture. He sent a disk to police that they traced back to the church where Rader served. Rader had used the church computer because his home computer was not working. Later, his DNA matched with the semen found at the crime spots, and he was charged with the crimes.

Where is Dennis Rader now?

Since his capture in 2005, Dennis Rader has been serving ten consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole at the El Dorado Correctional Facility in Kansas. He is 78 years old now. Probably his punishment is that he has to live by himself after everything he has done. Every shred of memory must bite like a snake and every moment must feel like a lifetime.

  1. Hey Oskar, thanks for commenting. I’ve gone in and modified the sentences for clarity where this was highlighted. It did say allegedly raped but I agree it is a little obsfucated so I’ve cleared that line up so it reads: “Police later found Rader’s semen near her partially-clothed body, leading to question marks about a possibility of rape. However, this has not been confirmed.”

Really appreciate you taking the time to comment and apologies once again for the confusion there!
