Where is Brittany Norwood now?
The Truth About My Murder is a crime documentary series featuring forensic pathologist and author Dr Richard Shepherd who uncovers the truth behind horrific crimes as told through the victims’ bodies.
One murder victim featured on the programme is a woman named Jayna Murray. She was killed by her co-worker, Brittany Norwood, in 2011.
In this article, we take a look at this chilling true crime case and ask the question: Where is Brittany Norwood now?
What did Brittany Norwood do?
Brittany Norwood was born in 1982 and grew up in Federal Way, Washington. She later moved to Long Island NY to study Sociology at Stony Brook University.
Norwood was described as sweet and funny by her friends and was known as an amazing soccer player. She was also known as a kleptomaniac, a vice that eventually cost her her scholarship.
Stealing wasn’t her only crime. In 2007, she allegedly stalked a former boyfriend too. But it was for the murder of Jayna Murray that she later became known for.
Norwood moved to Washington D.C. and gained a job at the Bethesda Lululemon Athletica in Bethesda, Maryland. On the 11th of March, 2011, at 9 pm, her co-worker Jayna Murray was locking up the store. When Murray carried out her usual anti-theft checks, she noticed there were stolen items stashed in Norwood’s bags. She then called her manager who said he would deal with the situation the next day.
At 10 pm, Murray received a phone call from Norwood who claimed she had left her wallet in the store. Murray returned to the store to unlock it, during which time she and Murray argued inside.
Employees at the Apple Store next door heard one of them saying, “Talk to me. Don’t do this. What’s going on?” This was followed by screams and the sounds of someone being hit or dragged. They then heard somebody say “God help me.. Please help me.” The reason they didn’t respond was because they dismissed the situation as “drama,” according to reports. (source)
The next morning, the manager of the Bethesda store arrived at work and found Murray lying face down in a pool of blood. He then found Norwood in the bathroom with zip ties around her wrists and ankles and blood on her face.
Norwood claimed that she and Murray had been assaulted and sexually attacked by three men in ski masks. However, during the investigation, the police concluded that Norwood was responsible for Murray’s death. The wounds on her own body were consistent with self-inflicted wounds, according to a forensics examiner.
331 wounds were found on Murray’s body from at least five different weapons. A garotte had also been used to strangle her. “The fatal wound was the one on the back of her neck which severed her spinal court and went all the way to her brain.” (source)
Norwood was arrested for the crime and charged with first-degree murder. On January 27, 2012, after a year-long trial. she was convicted of murder in the first degree and sentenced to life in prison with no possibility for parole.
Where is Brittany Norwood now?
In 2015, Norwood appealed her conviction with the help of her defence team who claimed detectives had questioned her improperly and that they hadn’t read her Miranda rights. Her claims were dismissed by the court so this cold-blooded killer still resides at the Maryland Correctional Institute for Women in Jessup, MD.
