This Too Shall Pass Away
Episode 6 of True Beauty begins with Jugyeong telling Seojun that Suho woke up in the hospital. Jugyeong wants to visit Suho but Seojun tells Jugyeong they don’t need to. Then, we cut away to Suho at the hospital. Jugyeong arrives and Suho tells Jugyeong not to feel guilty about his injury.
Sujin spots the two in the room and departs. Jugyeong feeds Suho his food because Suho’s arm’s broken. Jugyeong thanks Suho for helping her and Suho questions if Jugyeong should be here right now. He wonders why she isn’t practicing for the dance mission. Jugyeong yells at Suho. She admits that she doesn’t like being bullied.
Nevertheless, Jugyeong vows to win the Goddess competition. Suho tells Jugyeong to pick up her phone if an unknown number calls her. Jugyeong, Chaerin, and Sua head somewhere to help the former practice her dance moves. Jugyeong struggles to dance. A random boy calls Jugyeong.
The man tells her Suho informed her about her poor dancing skills. He wants to help Jugyeong learn how to dance. Jugyeong visits the man’s studio. He explains how things will go and Jugyeong’s nervous about everything.
We cut away to Seojun looking at a picture of Jugyeong. Seojun doesn’t know why Jugyeong cares so deeply for Suho. Some time passes. Jugyeong bumps into Seojun and shows him she’s improved her dancing skills. Seojun brings up Suho and Jugyeong tells Seojun to visit Suho if he’s worried about him.
Jugyeong leaves and presents Seojun with her portrait of him. She wants Seojun to keep it as a gift. Seojun doesn’t find the gift appealing. Jugeyong leaves and calls Suho. Suho tells Jugyeong that he’s being discharged from the hospital. He tells Jugyeong he’ll be fine and hopes everything is going well with Jugyeong and her dance teacher. He refuses to elaborate on his dancing history with her and asks Jugyeong not to come over.
Suho leaves the hospital and encounters Seojun. Seojun and Suho argue about Jugyeong. He argues that Suho likes throwing innocent people away. Then, Suho and Seojun receive a pre-sent message from Seyeon’s blog.
Seojun walks away. Before Seojun departs, Suho confronts him about the Seyeon situation. He promises Seojun he didn’t miss Seyeon’s call on purpose. Suho brings up his father’s 12-year age gap relationship scandal. We receive a flashback of Suho’s father telling Suho and his sister that the rumors about his scandal were false.
Suho spots his father with the woman in question and is sick to his stomach. Suho drops his phone and runs off somewhere. Seyeon calls Suho but Suho can’t answer because he’s nowhere near his device. Suho regrets not answering the phone. Suho explains he fled to Japan to avoid his father.
However, Suho returned to Korea when his father became active in Japan. Seojun doesn’t care about Suho’s reasons and departs. Jugyeong observes the two from afar. Jugyeong visits Han River to discuss this drama between Suho and Seojun with Suho. Suho says Seojun’s calling him a sociopath because Suho didn’t cry after Seyeon died.
Suho admits he didn’t cry because he argues he doesn’t deserve to feel sad about Seyeon’s death. Jugyeong offers Suho advice and Suho starts crying. Jugyeong receives a text message about the dance mission. She must upload her video in the next 30 minutes. Otherwise, Jugyeong will be disqualified.
Suho and Jugyeong go for a stroll in the city. Jugyeong asks Suho to film her dance video. Jugyeong films the video and receives a lot of praise for it. Others are recording Jugyeong or writing replies about Jugyeong’s dance in real time. The episode ends with Suho looking at his phone and blushing.
The Episode Review
True Beauty’s speedy pacing is hampering this one from telling a wonderful, emotionally impactful, story. Everything feels rushed and lacks proper care. From Jugyeong’s speedy dance skill achievement to the drama surrounding Suho and Seojun, the showrunners should’ve found ways to deliver details to audiences steadily.
Many fans will find it difficult to feel sympathy for our characters’ dilemmas. Additionally, Jugyeong’s dance number didn’t look as great as it could’ve been. The visuals and animation looked choppy. It offers the same jarring visuals fans are receiving from Delico’s Nursery. This is another anime that aired late in the Summer of 2024 anime season.
At least the scene between Jugyeong and Suho at Han River was somewhat touching. While the advice she gives Suho won’t vibe with everyone, it was pleasant seeing her share encouraging remarks with Suho. But all in all, this episode wasn’t too great.
We’re optimistic the next one can deliver better results though. Otherwise, it may be best for audiences to check out the K-drama for a more exceptional and passionate take on this tale.
