One-Winged Devil
Episode 9 of Tower of God begins with Khun asking Emily about Bam and being surprised to learn that he is alive. Immediately after, through Apple, who is Khun’s team’s information gatherer, he discovers that the “Devil of the Right Arm” is on the 28th floor and decides to capture him. Elsewhere, the photo of the said person has been circulated, and although his blue wing resembles Kang Horyang’s, we soon realize it’s not him.
Horyang, who calls the man Cassano, reveals that Cassano and he were abandoned children in the middle floors of the Tower who were taken as test subjects by the Workshop. The researchers at the Workshop were only concerned with making the best weapons. It was there that Horyang met Cassano. They soon became fast friends and met another researcher who gave them names. But soon, they were to be made into living Ignition Weapons. “Ignition Weapons are weapons that have assimilated the Shinsu of the soul. They’re the most powerful and beautiful weapons of all weapons” the head researcher states.
Both of them were implanted with half of the “devil.” After going through enormous pain, Horyang found himself being transported with his now powerful body. This is when he came across Headon and became a Regular at the Tower.
Horyang was named the “Devil of the Right Arm,” but since he felt guilty about his power being derived from the sacrifices of others, he stopped climbing the Tower at the 20th floor. This is when he heard about Cassano, who was being referred to by his name but actually used his left side. Knowing that Cassano is on the 28th floor to find Horyang, the team decides to help Horyang.
Later, when Viole goes to meet Horyang, it’s revealed that Viole is a living Ignition Weapon too. This is why, when he’s injured, a scorpion-like creature is created from his blood. When Horyang asks him about it, Viole says that he cannot disclose anything.
Horyang attacks Viole, trying to activate Viole’s weapon, as he wants to know the truth about the experiments and if FUG was involved in them. Viole later clarifies that FUG had a red light embedded in him. Unlike Horyang, there were no sacrifices. Horyang acknowledges this and leaves to find Cassano since he considers the team his family and does not want to put them in danger. Meanwhile, Khun’s team is on their way to capture the devil.
The Episode Review
As we mentioned before, what makes Tower of God such a popular webtoon is not only its engaging plot but also the real-life issues that it creatively portrays and highlights. Here, using abandoned children as test subjects for making weapons is something to think about in the episode.
It’s an understatement to say that the plot is getting more interesting with every episode. We don’t really know why Khun wants to capture the devil; perhaps he needs him to be on his team in order to move forward in his grand scheme of things. What’s certain is that the next episode is going to be a fun ride.
