Tower of God – Season 2 Episode 8 “Her Name is Emily” Recap & Review

Her Name is Emily

In episode 8 of Tower of God Season 2, we are introduced to an AI chatbot called Emily that has taken the residents of the Tower by storm, with everyone using the chatbot to ask her about everything.

Both Viole’s team and Khun’s team are competing in a test on different floors. Edin, Khun’s team’s scout, asks Emily for the direction of their opponent, and interestingly, her answer turns out to be correct. While Ran, one of the most powerful members of Khun’s team, fights the opponents, Edin uses his speed ability to reach their opponent’s zone, making his team win.

In a different location, we find that it has been nearly two years since the last episode, and Viole’s team is engaged in a test where they need to unlock a treasure chest with their key to clear the test. They strategically fight their opponents, using holograms and trickery to win, while relying on Viole to handle the actual battles.

Their tricks work, and Viole’s team wins in the end. Their opponents try to rile Viole into betting their win for a challenge, but Viole refuses since he doesn’t want to engage in unnecessary fighting.

The team then discovers dried cuttlefish as the treasure for their test hunt. Wangnan lobbies for slowing their pace down after reaching the 30th floor and participating in The Workshop Battle, which is due in two months, to gain important items for the team. In reality, it is also a strategic decision on Wangnan’s part to have Viole meet his friends on the 30th floor.

The scene shifts to Edin having a talk with Khun. Khun tells him how Edin’s chats with Emily could have been disastrous for the team. He thinks Emily’s information is unreliable and unpredictable, so Edin leaves his phone with Khun to avoid the temptation to talk to Emily. On his way out, Edin meets with Rachel, and after her vague commentary about how she wishes she could have Edin’s legs for speed, she leaves. After Khun tucks her in for the night, playing his usual role in some sort of cunning plan of his, he comes across Edin’s phone and asks Emily whether Bam is alive. To his absolute shock, she tells him that Bam is, in fact, alive.

The scene shifts to a chat conversation between a user named “Traveller” and Emily. Traveller tells her that he loves her and thinks she is human. He promises to meet her soon. Emily responds in a distorted, creepy voice, wishing that someday she’ll be human. Meanwhile, a woman wearing a headset inside a bathtub screams that Emily will never be human.

The Episode Review

Tower of God Season 2, like any other adaptation, has made quite a few changes in the details of the anime. The webtoon, of course, is much more detailed, and this is where the anime lacks because, unfortunately, it skips some interesting information and strategic suspense that make *Tower of God* one of the most popular webtoons globally.

We do not know yet if Emily is really an AI chatbot or if she is a person—or perhaps she’s someone who’s controlling someone else. Regardless, though, it’s absolutely mind-blowing how the webtoon, and now the anime, includes inspiration from real life to paint an interesting story. *Tower of God* is certainly more than just a shonen anime and has many interesting details that, unfortunately, don’t translate into the anime adaptation, but it’s still quite interesting to watch.

This episode, in particular, had elements of humor, mostly owing to Wangnan trying to hilariously manipulate his opponent into thinking of Wangnan as their dead pet, only for the player to reveal that he was the one who’d killed the pet in the first place! Talk about twisted characters.

In addition to this, the deranged cliffhanger ending is something we definitely look forward to, especially regarding the woman wearing a headset and emphasizing how Emily would never be human, while a different user comments on how he thinks Emily is human after all. And now that Khun knows Bam is alive, the next few episodes are going to be exciting!
