Tower of God – Season 2 Episode 7 “Mazino Magic” Recap & Review

Mazino Magic

Episode 7 of Tower of God Season 2 resumes with the high-ranker’s fight against Viole. If Viole can reach the flower before him, he can keep it. But if the high-ranker catches him, Viole’s life will belong to him.

Amidst high tensions and the imminent battle, Horyang communicates through the Pocket—a dense spherical communication device for climbers of the Tower—and asks the rest of the team to meet at a specific spot when the Zygaena rotates, so they can all attack the high-ranker simultaneously, buying time for Viole to reach the flower. They do exactly that, but the high-ranker proves far more powerful than expected.

Just as the high-ranker and Viole are about to clash, Misaeg suddenly appears, chasing a creature with the flower on its back. To protect her, Viole takes a hit and becomes unconscious. The high-ranker lets them take the flower and leave with the creature. He is later revealed to be Urek Mazino, the irregular 4th in rank, and one of the strongest Rankers. The test instructors try to stop him, but it’s in vain. Elsewhere, Viole mysteriously heals himself from his physical injuries but remains unconscious.

It’s later revealed that the flower is the source of a rare jewel. The creature with the flower on its back is actually a Zygaena’s baby. The Yeon family, to whom the Zygaena is a trademark, has been secretly getting rid of the babies because they derive their nutrition from the flowers, lowering the jewel’s value.

Yuri Zahard had ordered Urek to retrieve a Zygaena baby so the jewel could become common since the creature would no longer be exclusive to the 21st floor. Yihwa takes the hardest hit regarding the scandal of her family, but Hwa Ryun motivates her to take matters into her own hands by becoming a Ranker and sorting out the mess of her family.

All this time, Viole remains unconscious. Ha Jinsung proposes to Wangnan that they should leave Viole if they don’t want to die because Viole will fight any opponent regardless of their strength, as happened in the Zygaena battle. Wangnan is swayed and tries to convince his teammates, but they insist on climbing the Tower with Viole. Wangnan then informs Ha Jinsung that the team will stand behind Viole, and Jinsung relents.

While Yihwa interprets cooking as a way of taking matters into her own hands, forcing the teammates to eat burnt food, we see Jinsung being approached by another FUG member, Karaka. To justify Jinsung’s actions regarding Viole’s teammates, Jinsung explains that the more friends Viole makes, the more hostages there will be to motivate Viole to keep climbing the Tower. Although Karaka seems satisfied, he asks one of his shadowy attendants to keep an eye on the team and kill them if they seem suspicious.

The episode ends with Wangnan asking Hwa Ryun for help in finding Viole’s friends. She explains that there’s a warehouse on the 30th floor of the Tower where Rankers occasionally assemble and fight for gear and resources. If they can reach the 30th floor within two years, they have a chance of meeting Viole’s friends.

The Episode Review

‘Tower of God’ Season 2’s complex worldbuilding makes for an interesting episode. The anime hints at the various threads that connect the plot, but it lacks the nuances present in the original webtoon—the significance of the flower, the Yeon family’s scandal, and Yuri’s connection to the matter are only briefly touched upon.

Despite this, ‘Tower of God’ Season 2 remains engaging as we move closer to a specific goal with each episode. Now that FUG has temporarily left Viole and his new team alone, it’s time for them to begin their journey to climb the Tower and reach the 30th floor within two years. For this to happen, they need to power up, as their lack of skills and training was painfully evident in the last test, where Viole took the most damage.
