The Other Team
Our recap of ‘Tower of God’ season 2 episode 5 begins with Khun reminiscing about his friendship with Bam. He is informed about a powerful slayer candidate showing up on the 20th floor. This is when he is approached by Edin Dan the Scout. Edin is one of the talented climbers who got tired of taking the exams and climbing the tower and became a scout instead.
Khun offers Edin a bet: if Edin wins, he’d get an extremely precious stone that can make him an overnight billionaire. But if Khun wins, Edin gets nothing and has to join his team for climbing the tower. Eventually, Khun wins through his classic deception, and Edin is reluctantly brought to his house.
Astonishingly enough, we find that Khun has been taking care of Rachel, who is supposed to have bad legs and cannot climb the tower on her own. They also seem to have a complicated relationship. This is what Novick tells Edin about Khun. Novick the Spear Bearer is among the top ten E-rankers of the Tower.
He introduces Edin to the rest of the team: Apple, the information-gathering scout; Michael the Missionary, the team’s unlicensed doctor and Wave Controller; Gyetang, the spear bearer and the team’s chef; and Ran, the fisherman. We find that Endorsi and Anak have been climbing the tower together with another top 3 ranker. Endorsi’s team are allies of Khun.
The teammates then engage in a “pecking order” to determine who is the strongest among them all, which is just an excuse for Novick to fight Ran, who is among the strongest E-rankers. Ran eventually comes out victorious.
In the meantime, it’s revealed that Rachel has been lying about her legs and putting up a front. What’s goosebumps-inducing is that Khun knows! Being the master of cunning, he later informs his team that they are going to climb the tower.
Once he usurps the throne from the current leader of the Khun family, he promises to give everything to his teammates in return for protecting Rachel. However, he warns them against getting emotionally involved with her and reveals that she killed Bam, his closest friend. He asks them to pretend to be her friends.
In the meantime, Viole’s new teammates have been living in his rented apartment. He goes out to meet an acquaintance, and Yihwa follows him, thinking he’s a hazard to the public, and meets with Viole’s FUG acquaintance.
The Episode Review
Tower of God has picked up the charm for which it is so popular! After the initial few contextual episodes, this episode has been thrilling as we meet Khun, the master manipulator and the king of cunning in the Tower of God series. And he knows Rachel’s secret, which is quite reassuring because someone needs to teach her a lesson.
Rachel is possibly one of the most loathsome characters I have come across, perhaps because of the betrayal of the century she’s been associated with. Now that Khun is back, the anime is sure to become even more interesting.
On the other hand, Bam, or Viole, has found some new teammates yet again, and perhaps we will see a stronger version of him soon. In the next episode, we might get more insights into what happened to Bam after Rachel pushed him and he was found by the FUG member who eventually recruited him.
With this, we end our ‘Tower of God’ season 2 episode 5 recap and review. We will meet you in the next episode!
