Caves
As the level begins, you will find yourself in a cave. Follow the tunnel until you come to an open area containing a stream. If you take the path to the left, you will have to do a lot of jumping to get to a mechanism that allows you to exit the level. But don’t be fooled! You can’t leave the level yet (unsurprisingly) as the machine lacks three cogs. As such, there is no point heading to the machine at this stage, especially as it takes a lot of acrobatics to get there.
Instead, jump into the stream and allow yourself to be carried through the water and over a waterfall (pictured above). You will fall into the pool below. Patrolling this area are two wolves so climb onto the ledge on the left and shoot the wolves from a safe distance.
Once the wolves are dead, jump to the other side of the pool and continue into the next cave. There is another wolf here so kill it and then press on through the twisty passage until you come to a wall with blocks to climb on and an opening above. You can head up there now if you want or you can follow the tunnel to the right where three wolves await. If you take the second option, stand on the ledge and kill the wolves before returning to the wall with the opening.
Climb the blocks to the opening and continue forward until you find the skeleton of a lost traveller. There is a medipack next to his body (his loss is your gain) so pick it up and go down the slope ahead of you. When you have reached the bottom, you will discover The Lost Valley. You did remember to bring your dinosaur repellant with you, right?
The Lost Valley
The Lost Valley is beautiful to behold but don’t take time to look at the scenery. As soon as you enter this area you will be attacked by a velociraptor, so draw your pistols and kill it before it kills you. HINT: You can take it out from a safe distance by returning to the ledge at the valley opening.
As you run forward, there is another raptor to kill. Somersault and backflip while shooting to avoid becoming dino food or return to the ledge if you’d rather. Once the raptor is dead, there is no time to get your breath back. The ground will rumble beneath you, signalling the arrival of a T-Rex (image above)
If you move in too close to this mammoth beast, you risk being eaten, so it’s wise to keep a safe distance. Either run around the area taking shots at the dinosaur or play it safe and run into the cave located at the right wall. You can take out the T-Rex from here or you can run through the cave to get to a higher ledge. There is a raptor in this area so be prepared for another Lara vs Dino battle.
After bringing down the T-Rex, continue into the valley and kill the two raptors that approach you. Head towards the temple but don’t go in just yet. To the right of the temple is a rock you can climb onto (see image above). Climb up here, do a standing jump to the next three ledges, and then leap onto the temple roof. This is where you’ll discover the first secret, which consists of a medipack and ammo for the shotgun, magnum, and uzis.
Drop down from the temple and move away from the building until you come to the pictured waterfall. To the left of the waterfall is a rock you can climb up. Keep climbing and then jump to the ledge on your right. Jump up and hang onto the crack in the wall. Then shimmy along to your right until you are in the middle of the waterfall. Climb up and head into the cave for the second secret, some handy shotgun shells. Once you have retrieved them, return to the ground.
At the other side of the waterfall is another cave entrance where you’ll find the third secret – more shotgun shells. Exit and head along the wall until you come to another cave. Climb up the ledge, head inside, and get ready for a fight with a raptor. Continue deeper into the cave until you get to a series of ledges. After you climb up these you will find the first cog.
Climb down and swim through the pool below. This will lead you back into the valley. Return to the temple, step inside, and head into the water on the right-hand side (see above). Below the water is the second machine cog. Pick it up and then head back outside.
To the right of the temple is another cave entrance (see image). Climb up and into a tunnel. This will take you to a broken bridge. You will need to take a running jump to cross the large gap, so we suggest saving your game before the jump, just in case you mess up and fall! Once you have made it to the other side of the bridge, you will find the third machine cog. Pick it up and then drop down to the ground below.
You can now return to the caves and the stream that you discovered at the start of the level.
The Cog Machine
When back at the stream, you need to jump from bank to bank. These jumps are tricky to pull off because the camera sometimes goes awry. If you struggle to see what you’re doing, position the camera behind you so you can get a better look at where you’re jumping to. If you miss the jumps, you will fall into the water and get swept away again, so be prepared for a little frustration if you mistime your leaps.
On your last jump across the stream, you will get to a ledge. Climb up and follow the tunnel to the bridge (pictured above). When you reach the machine, insert the three cogs you found earlier and pull the lever. This will activate a gate that diverts the water, so you will no longer be swept into the waterfall.
Before leaving the area, it’s time to find the fourth secret. Turn round so the bridge is on Lara’s right and drop down to hang from a crack in the wall. Shimmy to the left and drop down onto a flattish rock. There is a cave here containing the secret – a large medipack.
Jump into the water and swim downstream to the gold gate. Turn left and climb out of the water onto the bank where you will discover another dead explorer and a shotgun lying next to his remains.
Jump back into the water and swim away from the gate to the end of the passageway. Follow the tunnel until you reach the opening pictured above. Climb up and into a room containing the fifth secret – a small medipack and two boxes of shotgun shells.
Leave the room, continue forward and then jump over the rocks to the large pool below. Climb onto the ledge that was previously hidden by the waterfall and follow the passageway to the end of the level.
