Consequences
Episode 9 of Tokyo Vice Season 2 begins with Katagiri meeting Nagata at her house. As expected, she has been transferred for pointing a finger at Funaki. However, using a source in Internal Affairs, she is able to confirm that Tozawa blackmailed Funaki using an affair he had. She urges Katagiri to finish the job they started as he nods convincingly.
Eimi and her team are now investigating the links between Tozawa and the FBI who were helping him get the transplant in exchange for info about yakuza activity in Hawaii.
Sato and Ichikawa have a meeting. Tozawa is rapidly consolidating power and absorbing the other gumis. Ichikawa advises Sato to join Tozawa’s ranks or else face obliteration. Sato, though, remains undecided. Tozawa makes it clear to his wife that their marriage is restricted only to the extent of their relationship.
Katagiri and Jake are working together on the FBI informant lead. A yakuza member, Harada, is allegedly working in cahoots with them. Tracking him down will be the next course of their action.
Trendy presses Jason, his friend from the Embassy, to get more info about this alleged agreement. Jason doesn’t promise anything firm but might be of help.
Erika makes it clear to Samantha that she is done with the club. After the incident at Akira’s house, her opinion is that Samantha is drawn to chaos, which Erika doesn’t want in her life.
Katagiri summons Funaki, who accepts everything. Although the exchange is intense, Funaki reveals that he told Tozawa the route that the police car took when the witness was killed instead of Katagiri and his family. Maybe he isn’t so evil after all!
Lo and behold, Jason confirms that Tozawa is an FBI informant. Although he won’t go on record, this news could bring Tozawa’s credibility down to zero. But they still need something concrete to publish. Jake takes the mantle to get the quote from the US Embassy, even if he is at risk. In a disturbing event, Kei physically harasses and slaps Ryo, Shingo’s son, at the school due to the spoilt bid to kidnap him earlier.
Tozawa is leaning on his influence with Shigematsu to get a deal with Suzaku Financial. It is tricky but his determination is strong. They discuss the deal while playing golf and one of them mentions that he saw Misaki at a party. This enrages Tozawa who instantly makes the connection with Jake. Let’s see what happens next…Jake gets on Lynn’s case at the Embassy ensuring that the report is mentioned. This will put a target the size of the moon on Jake’s back.
Meanwhile, Tin Tin uses Dr Tominaga’s yakuza influence as leverage to get credible info about Tozawa’s operation. Jake goes to Sato for protection, promising he will take down Tozawa with his article. It is a no-brainer for both parties to root out a common enemy. Misaki, unable to contact Jake, goes to Samantha to reach him. Samantha promises to help her, even if it means risking her life.
In a tragic incident, Tin Tin is stabbed by Tozawa’s men as he is going back to the office with Tominaga’s info. Tozawa’s men attack the Chichara-kai office, wiping out almost all the men, but Sato, Gen, and Jake make it out alive.
Shingo gives Eimi an ultimatum to either part ways with Kei – after the incident – or break up with him. Eimi has to deal with even more stress as Tin Tin is rushed to the ICU. She confronts Baku, who is there, with allegations about protecting Tozawa. Baku naturally rejects the idea but there is a genuine emotion in his pleadings.
Samantha and Misaki are chased by Tozawa when the duo visit Jake’s house. Sato and a handful of Chihara-kai take Jake to a safe place…but for how long, no one knows.
Yabuki takes the bait that Katagiri fed him through Funaki and goes to murder the detective in his hotel room. Katagiri and Nagata arrest him for Ohno’s murder by using the murder weapon and getting his prints on it. However, Yabuki promises to come after Katagiri once Tozawa “becomes his boss.”
In a shocking development, Kazuko approaches Katagiri. Earlier, we saw Tozawa humiliate her and insist that he doesn’t need her anymore. Now, she wants to incriminate her husband and restore power to herself. She says that the evidence to send Tozawa to jail permanently is stored at the hotel suite.
The Episode Review
Episode 9 ties up the entire second season so well that the finale doesn’t need to do anything out of turn. It only needs to follow up on the fantastic work in the past few weeks, building up Tokyo Vice as one of the best shows on TV right now. The writers make a safe choice by consolidating the action in and around the familiar group. The thick of the story has run through them and that is a fair conclusion.
Kazuko’s emergence into the narrative isn’t happenstance. Ever since the third episode, she has constantly featured and threatened to become a turning point.
It is fitting that the story begins and ends at the Yoshino, which could send away Tozawa forever. Fate has a funny way of manifesting into dreary outcomes for those who challenge it. Episode 9 is quite intricate in how everything falls into place, an admirable standard that the show has kept up till now. Thumbs up!
