Tokyo Swindlers – Season 1 Episode 3 Recap & Review

Episode 3

Our ‘Tokyo Swindlers’ episode 3 recap and review begins with Aoyagi and his team visiting the land site in the hope of gaining ownership but repeatedly being turned down by Natsumi Kawai. Takumi shows the team the reality of Natsumi’s Thursday night rendezvous, and they decide that the popular host Kaede would help them get Natsumi away from the property when they decide to act on the scam. Takeshita is becoming increasingly demanding about more money, especially when he’s on meth.

Later, Goto reveals that he’s gotten a lead through a land shark he was associated with back in the day, who told him about Sekiyo House urgently looking for land to purchase. Harrison picks them as a target due to their ongoing political struggle, with the company divided into factions supporting either the chairman or the president. Elsewhere, Kuramochi relays Takumi’s past to Tatsu.

Takumi starts working undercover at the host club using prosthetic makeup, which results in him having a big scar on his face and certain sections of his body. We discover that he has taken on the appearance of his father. Elsewhere, Kuramochi and Tatsu meet Takumi’s father in prison. He recalls how he killed his family in a rage after Takumi, who had been responsible for sales, met with a swindler offering to sell land and eventually scammed the family.

While undercover with Kaede, Takumi finds that Kaese is involved in prostitution of young runaway minors. Elsewhere, the land shark proposes approaching Sekiyo House through a middleman, a company called Abiru Holdings, which has a good reputation and would make Sekiyo House interested since it would be dealing with a reliable company. He offers to help the group for a small commission, and Harrison later agrees to the deal.

Later, Kaede arranges for Takumi to become Natsumi’s partner that night. After they finish, Kaede wants his usual taste of minor girls. This is when Takumi sends Orochi in to record Kaede’s involvement in the illegal activity. The two later threaten Kaede into doing what they please.

Meanwhile, Goto meets with the CEO of Abiru Holdings under the guise of being Natsumi’s representative, and they strike a deal to work together without the man knowing about the upcoming scam. After the deal is done, Harrison has the land shark killed later that night, watching him die on video.

The Episode Review

With this episode, our team of land swindlers are on the move. When Harrison commented about a big project that would leave dead bodies behind, he definitely wasn’t being rhetorical. The pacing of the episode, like all others, has been engaging, fitting for a crime thriller. All the scenes and chess pieces are well connected, making it easier to follow the show without getting bored.

Takumi transforms into the likeness of his father in this episode while on the swindler job, almost like he’s on a mission for revenge. At the same time, the burned face was intended to keep him away from the dirty job, which Takumi eventually engaged in. Through watching himself in the mirror, we also find that he harbours deep trauma regarding the fire that killed his family. Overall, it is an engaging episode that helps advance the plot while providing titbits of background information on Takumi’s character.
