Mr Bates vs The Post Office | Timeline of Events related to the Post Office Scandal

Fact-based drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office retells events related to The British Post Office scandal, which has rightly been called one of the worst miscarriages of justice in British history.

The series tells the stories of some of the sub-postmasters who were wrongly accused of theft and fraud by Post Office management. In truth, it was an error within the Horizon accounting system rolled out by the Post Office that created apparent cash shortfalls at certain Post Office branches.

In this article, we present a timeline of key events related to the Post Office scandal.

1999

The Post Office rolls out Horizon, a new accounting system developed by Fujitsu, across the UK.

2000-2002

Faulty Horizon data results in more than 100 prosecutions of post office branch employees across the UK.

In May 2002, Shopkeeper Baljit Sethi contacts his local newspaper to report errors about Horizon at his Brentwood branch. The Post Office refute his claims.

After refusing liability for the shortfall at his branch, Alan Bates has his contract terminated by the Post Office.

Later that month, Vennells makes an apology to the sub-postmasters. She says: “I am truly sorry we were unable to find both a solution and a resolution outside of litigation and for the distress this caused.”
