Episode 2
Sorcery tools can give you almost the same amount of power a witch has. However, to use it and not die, you need sacrifices. For that reason, they are forbidden.
A woman hears a sound while going back to her house. She notices a lot of crows around her, and soon looks behind, thinking someone is following her. As she doesn’t see anything, she continues on her path. Suddenly, someone catches the woman, and blood starts pouring out of her eyes. The unknown killer says it’s still not enough.
Guideau and Ashaff take on another job; they have to capture a magical beast without hurting it. As it has nothing to do with witches, Guideau steps away, which Ashaff finds childish. He controls water and surrounds the monster’s head with it, making it unable to breath.
While they have lunch, Guideau is grumpy and asks about their last jobs. None of them were related to witches, so she asks why does Ashaff thinks he joined the Order. As she says that, a new letter comes, and he implies it’s a witch. They go an old lady’s house, and Ashaff undoes a spell that is locking a box. As they leave, he tells Guideau that’s a lesson for her, and that she needs to take all cases seryously.
Luckily for Guideau, they receive a black letter, indicating a witch is central to the case. It seems one is committing grotesque serial murders in Hayden. As both a witch and a grimoire are involved, Ashaff says it won’t be an easy job.
In a flashback, a woman sees a building burning with her children inside while she can’t do anything to stop it. She wakes up from her dream and arrives to a crime scene. Her name is Kiera Haines, the only mage of the Hayden police. She finds three hanged bodies and tells her partner the only way they can deal with the witch is by figuring out her spells. There’s no way the police can handle the case otherwise.
As Kiera walks around the town, she finds Ashaff and Guideau talking about the murders. She interrogates them, as they are clearly saying those things because they know her. Ashaff says the order sent them and they all go to a restaurant to discuss more.
As the Paladin Corps should deal with witches instead of the police, Ashaff theorizes the Mayor wants the cops to solve the case so he can claim all the glory.
Kiera asks why they are working with the Order and Guideau explains her situation. She does that because the officer says she is using a spell that detects lies. However, after saying she trusts them better now, she tells them she has no spell of the sort. They agree to meet again and start working together the next day.
The Episode Review
Not much happens this episode, but it’s still a good addition to the series. We learn a bit more the Order and magic in that world. Besides, as it’s the start of a new arc, things are usually slow at first.
One problem with it is Guideau’s personality. She is just grumpy the whole episode and doesn’t have a single line that’s not related to wanting to hunt witches. In the first episode, she acts the exact same way. If she doesn’t begin to do more things, she’ll get boring very fast.
At least, Ashaff is a bit cool. We still need to learn more about him, but he is more courteous and smart, which is a good contrast to Guideau. As he can use magic, we also see him doing a variety of things, like controlling water to defeat the beast.

I agree about Guideau; in my opinion, she seems to be the only thing holding back an otherwise pretty solid show
