The Wheel of Time – Season 2 Episode 3 “What Might Be” Recap & Review

What Might Be

In episode 3 of The Wheel of Time season 2, the sisters begin telling Nynaeve about the trial of the arches. They inform her that she must overcome her greatest fears to make it out of the trial. They proceed to inform her of the potential dangers of the task at hand. Nynaeve, however, is willing to go through with the trial of the arches.

She has a tough time with the first two challenges. Nonetheless, she prevails over them. However, her feelings for Lan prevent her from focusing on overcoming the third challenge. Following this, we learn that she passed away during the course of the trial.

Perrin and the Shienarans are then brought before Lady Suroth and her minions. When a man disobeys Lady Suroth’s commands to bend down to her, she has him ruthlessly murdered to instil fear into the hearts of others in attendance. Everyone then takes the oath and bows to her.

The focus then shifts to Rand, who is seen spending time with Logain in the hopes that he may have a solution to his helplessness. Logain is able to see right through him, therefore he questions his motivations. He then assigns Rand a mission when he learns that Rand wants to find out how to control his strength and not go insane.

When Egwene goes to visit Nynaeve she learns that Nynaeve has passed away. Following this, she feels an overwhelming sense of loss. While everything is going on, Liandrin pays Mat a visit and lets him out of the cell. She then tells him that he is worthless because he betrayed his close friends, despite his denials. Then, she advises him to see Egwene if she wants to keep him.

Egwene confronts Liandrin shortly afterwards about her role in Nynaeve’s death. Following this, Liandrin reveals that she had placed her trust in Nynaeve, only to be disappointed.

Rand hurries to meet Logain in the hopes of finding a solution to manage his abilities. Following this, Logain discloses that Rand has no control over his abilities and that they will eventually overpower him.

After leaving the cell, Mat hurries to meet Egwene. However, after witnessing her sorrow, he reconsiders. Instead, he releases Min and they decide to run away together. At this time around, we understand Min and Liandrin are working together. As for Perrin, he manages to escape from the moving carriage. Following this, a wolf assists in leading the way, and Perrin follows.

Rand, on the other hand, is powerless to control his abilities. He unintentionally wields The One Power in the middle of the night and ends up burning down the house. Meanwhile, Nynaeve endures and overcomes her fears in the trial of the arches during the episode’s concluding moments and she returns alive. But she is consumed with sadness, and Egwene attempts to console her before the episode comes to a close.

The Episode Review

The development of Nynaeve’s character throughout this episode is quite intriguing, and it keeps viewers on the edge of their seats the entire time. Additionally, Egwene’s portrayal of loss is disturbing and moving.

In this episode, we see how vicious Lady Suroth and the Dark Ones can be. The portrayal of their brutality is quite horrifying. Mat’s character is also explored in this episode. It’s worth noting that one of the primary characters has a deep streak of grey. However, the actor portraying Mat doesn’t do the character justice.
