White Boy
Episode 5 of The Vince Staples Show starts with a flashback from when Vince was a young boy and his father was still in their lives. Vince’s mother – Anita and his father – Drew share a loving relationship overall but behind Anita’s back, Drew drinks a lot of alcohol. As the years go by, Vince’s father is arrested and his mother starts smoking and drinking openly in front of Vince who is now a high schooler.
Years later, Vince Staples is now called into his high school as an alumni to talk to the black kids in the school and empower them. Vince talks about his life to the kids when one of the boys asks to go to the restroom. In the washroom, the young boy hands over some weed to another boy who is sitting in the neighbouring stall in exchange for some cash.
The boys get out of the stalls and smoke up the weed as the boy makes it back to class where Vince is still giving his talk to the disinterested kids. As all the kids leave, one boy stays back and stares at Vince. Vince asks the boy what is wrong and the boy states that Vince was his father’s classmate.
The boy adds that Vince used to call his father “White Boy” which leaves him confused. He also tells Vince that his father hated him for how he treated Vince for what he had done to him. Vince leaves the school and calls his other friends, wondering who they referred to as White Boy during high school.
Vince’s friend tells Vince that he should leave the school premises as soon as possible because the White Boy sounded dangerous to his safety. In the school parking lot, the little boy is standing with his father as Vince walks in front of them. White Boy chases after Vince and tries to shoot and kill him. Vince ends up entering a house and the homeowner, a white man, lends his gun to Vince.
White Boy tells his son that he was playing laser tag with Vince. Vince ends up going to a laundromat and changes his clothes. However, White Boy notices him when they both end up buying some fast food. The chase continues with Vince entering a large store. White Boy leaves his son in the ca Er and goes inside the store to kill Vince.
How does The Vince Staples Show End?
Eventually, Vince ends up standing behind White Boy and shoots him. Vince leaves the store and spots the young boy who is still waiting in his car for his dad to return. Vince gets back home where Deja waits for him. Deja asks him how his day was and Vince tells him he had a pretty normal day.
Meanwhile, the news reporter announces that a black man is being shot inside the store. The episode ends with White Boy’s son watching a TV commercial featuring Vince.
The Episode Review
This episode sends chills down my spine and I am sure the makers are not trying to paint the Black community as cold-blooded murders but the show is trying to shed some light onto why the people living in these black neighbourhoods do as they do. The chase between White Boy and Vince could have been settled with a sit-down conversation but White Boy leaves no room for that when he chases after Vince and tries to shoot him,
Overall, the episode is extremely well-shot as we get an insight into Vince’s childhood and his life. He is just a boy raised by his single mother following the arrest of his father. The nonchalance with which Vince comes back home after committing a murder is beyond me and I am not sure what to make of it.
The show has been an interesting watch and hopefully there will be more seasons of this, highlighting other struggles and themes of the African-American community.
