The Trunk – K-drama Episode 7 Recap & Review

Episode 7

Episode 7 of The Trunk begins with Hye-yeong’s funeral. No one is present except In-ji since Si-jeong has to take care of her sick aunt. As In-ji makes her way to graduation, so does Jeong-won who is visiting his mother’s grave. In-ji is volunteering and she gives him slippers on seeing his torn sandals. He notices her mourning garbs and assures her that she is not responsible for her friend’s death.

At present, In-ji enters the flat and sees Do-ha’s bloody knife. A worried Jeong-won shows up as well after finding her address in the contract. However, she lashes out at him for getting all up in her business. He retaliates by calling her clingy for staying in Do-ha’s place and she kicks him out.

Meanwhile, an injured Tae-song drags himself to a pharmacy. A flashback shows Do-ha beating him up. Turns out, Tae-song is the one who exposed his affairs to Mrs. Noh. Do-ha has no qualms about killing him and lets him off with a warning. At present, the pharmacist tries to call the cops and Tae-song kills her when she refuses to help him.

Do-ha makes his way back to the apartment and Do-dam spots him. She tells him about In-ji waiting for him for years and he enters and sees that she has cleaned his knife and left.

In-ji goes back to Jeong-won’s and he gives her the silent treatment. She heads to In-yeong’s who has finally left her husband. In-ji tells her about the previous night and In-yeong wonders if she is afraid of confronting Do-ha.

Jeong-won is ranting to Hyeong-cheol and reveals that he wasn’t angry but worried for In-ji. His mood instantly lightens up as In-ji texts him an apology. As for In-ji, she meets up with Si-jeong who is worried for her as well. Si-jeong also points out that ever since Jeong-won entered her life, In-ji has been happy. She wants In-ji to accept that she is in love with Jeong-won. But In-ji claims it doesn’t matter as their contract will end one day.

Jeong-won is making dinner for In-ji but Seo-yeon shows up. To push him into divorcing In-ji, Seo-yeon reveals why she chose In-ji as the fake wife. During graduation, she didn’t care what state Jeong-won was in. But she took some shoes for him purely because she was annoyed that In-ji offered him slippers. His being with In-ji made Seo-yeon want to be with him. He claims it is just pushing them apart further and she blames him for dragging the fake marriage on.

As she leaves, she runs into In-ji and tries to insult her as a low-rent fake wife. However, In-ji sees through her and is amused that Seo-yeon is insecure that she may be replaced. Back inside, In-ji and Jeong-won patch up as they both accept that they were in the wrong. Meanwhile, a frustrated Ji-o tries to change Seo-yeon’s mind. He believes they are a better fit and she simply kisses him.

As for Do-ha, he finally texts In-ji. She makes him lunch but he gets right to the point. He was upset and wanted to blame her for everything but it hurt him to hurt her. She too points out that she was in limbo, waiting for him to end their relationship. But she is glad that she finally has gotten closure.

She heads home and finds Jeong-won waiting for her at the bus stop. She starts crying and he is glad to see her let it all out. However, she explains that her tears weren’t because of Do-ha but for the fact that Jeong-won was there for her.

In contrast to their quiet, domestic life, Hyeon-cheol and Yun-a’s marriage is chaotic. She is tired of looking after her family and wants to work. He gets a reality check that his sons are growing up and he cries. She comforts him and he hugs her.

It cuts to the cops finding the pharmacist’s corpse. A keeper tells In-ji that Tae-song has started stalking Jeong-won as well. Fed up, she finally sets up a meeting with him. He is over the moon but she gets right to the point as she asks why he is bothering her.

He claims he revealed Do-ha’s bisexual nature because he wanted to protect her. He also broke into the flat because he wanted to find her contract which is in her trunk and expose her fake marriage to Jeong-won. He is amused that Do-ha has changed and blames him for the pharmacist’s death. This shocks In-ji who leaves.

She heads to Jeong-won’s office and he is excited to show her his workplace. However, Tae-song follows her till the garage and stops her. He wonders if killing Jeong-won will finally get him her attention. She tries to leave and he gets physical before Jeong-won shows up and punches him.

It cuts to In-ji watching the river freeze. At the same time, Jeong-won shoots at a gun range and Hyeon-cheol wonders about his gun which is an unregistered one, belonging to Mr. Han.

In-ji has had enough and she tells Lee Seon that she is leaving after her contract with Jeong-won ends. She refuses to elaborate why, except she is putting NM at risk because of Tae-song. Lee Seon doesn’t buy it and questions Do-dam who is a mole. The “neighbour” ends up suggesting that In-ji is quitting because she wants to protect Jeong-won.

As for Jeong-won, he asks his caretaker to put up some CCTVs. They come across Seo-yeon’s spycam and he is furious. He heads over and Ji-o warns Seo-yeon who isn’t home. However, he lets Jeong-won see her computer. Jeong-won goes through the saved footage and finds the one where In-ji is crying after learning of the spycam.

At the end of The Trunk Episode 7, a flashforward has Officer Kim interrogating In-ji. Forensics confirms Tae-song as the pharmacist’s killer but Kim also needs to find whoever killed him. Kim suggests In-ji may be the prime suspect and asks for her alibi. She claims she was in the water and a flashback shows her firing a gun.

The Episode Review

The Trunk Episode 7 finally wraps up most loose ends and leaves the final plot twist for the finale aka who killed Tae-song. In the meantime, Jeong-won finally learns of Seo-yeon’s spycam, he and In-ji accept their feelings for each other, and she gets closure from her relationship with Do-ha. It also reveals that she wasn’t really his beard but in an open relationship with him.

And he ran away without a word because he initially blamed her for ruining their set-up by asking for a wedding which acted as the catalyst for the whole scandal. Though, it seems unfair since in a previous episode, he was ready to marry her for convenience.

The penultimate episode also explains Tae-song’s role in the plot from being the one responsible for the scandal to threatening Jeong-won which is just the push In-ji needs to get rid of him.

There is one thing that is bothering us though and that is the small montage of Hyeon-cheol and Yun-a’s marriage throughout the show. It is revealed in bits and pieces at random to act as a foil to the messy and fake marriages of Jeong-won and Seo-yeon.

But it doesn’t overtly add anything to the plot which is why it seems like the writers should have gone about a different way to highlight the contrasting nature of the fake and genuine marriages in this Netflix K-drama. In our opinion, it isn’t even needed as it seems like Seo-yeon and Jeong-won’s marriage feels more fake than his and In-ji’s which seems genuine.
