Episode 1
Episode 1 of The Snow Girl 2: The Soul Game begins with a bloody Miren running from someone on the beach. It cuts to a few days ago. Miren has been on a book tour following the release of her book, The Snow Girl which is about finding Amaya.
On the last day, she gets a parcel that says “Do you want to play?” It has a photo of a tied-up Laura Valdivia. She disappeared in 2012 when she was 17. Miren also catches someone filming her.
Elsewhere, Inspector Belen is about to be transferred and her partner, Detective Chaparro insists on a farewell party. Their latest case is Allison Hernandez, a 17-year-old girl found dead in an abandoned hotel. She has been strung up as if she is on a crucifix.
Miren and her mentor, Eduardo go through Laura’s disappearance. It was wrapped up as a runaway case and one of the first assignments of Miren when she began her career. Eduardo wants her to alert the police but she decides to investigate it.
As for Allison, the autopsy reveals that there was no struggle. She also carved a cross on her wrist a few months ago. At the same time, a religious person is watching Miren’s interview about her sexual assault.
Miren heads back to work at her newspaper, Diario Sur and sees her desk has been given to Jaime. Their boss, Paco announces that they are to work as partners on Allison’s case. Their first lead is Los Arcos – the elite school of Allison and…Laura! It is also Jaime’s alma mater.
Miren is cold and aloof as they head to the school. Her straightforward manner doesn’t help but Jaime charms Sofia, the receptionist and secures them a meeting with Principal Garrido. He warns Miren that Garrido is quite religious and protective of his school.
Meanwhile, Belen visits Allison’s grandma, Juana who also worked as a janitor at the school. Juana is quite religious but is unaware of the scar on Allison’s wrist. Chaparro also notices a man acting dodgy near the hotel.
Back at school, Garrido is charming and welcoming. Miren notices his previous guest was Alberto Mendoza, a renowned philanthropist and a board member. She suddenly asks about Laura which makes Garrido act defensive. He claims that both Laura and Allison attended on scholarships but that’s the only common factor.
Jaime is blindsided by the questioning and reprimands Miren for it. She brings up Madrid and he storms off. She stays back and attends the assembly for Allison. Garrido goes on about protecting the school’s morals against savages who may use Allison’s death to berate them. After the assembly, Miren spots Nacho, Laura’s brother but he runs off.
We see that Jaime has a strained relationship with his possibly ex-wife, Carol and plans to visit his daughter, Olivia in Madrid soon.
Miren asks Eduardo about the school and he shares that 90% of the families there are religious. He still doesn’t approve of her investigation and calls her obsessive. She lashes out at him and he leaves. She continues to follow Nacho who gives in and claims Allison hung out with a bad crowd. She gives him her number and he begrudgingly takes it.
Eduardo feels bad about their last conversation and is apologising to Miren via voice message when someone bumps into him. He heads to his class but soon he feels dizzy. He faints and is taken to the hospital.
Miren finds Jaime waiting outside their office and he brings up Madrid. She knows that he got fired for publishing false information about a local judge. He hints that there is more but changes the topic. He accepts that there is a link between Laura and Allison and will work on it with her. But he is out the moment Miren withholds information from him. She agrees to the deal.
At the precinct, Belen is tired of the deaths and the brutality. She suddenly spots a suspicious phone number in Allison’s diary. At a nearby church, Roberto, the dodgy guy from the hotel gives his condolence to Juana.
That night, Paco informs Miren that Eduardo had a heart attack and has passed away. At the end of The Snow Girl 2: The Soul Game Episode 1, a video clip resurfaces. Allison films herself – it is her second test for the Soul Game and she wants to be worthy. She runs across train tracks and barely makes it as a train passes through.
The Episode Review
The Snow Girl 2: The Soul Game Episode 1 gives us a brand new mystery while still staying connected to the previous season. Miren, Belen, Chaparro and even Eduardo return for the Netflix Spanish Original which focuses on the Soul Game. There is no time to waste as suspicious players make themselves known, clues and red herrings pepper the chapter and our heroes flounder in the dark.
We do hope Belen and Chaparro play a larger role as they are sure to fill in the blanks missing from Jaime and Miren’s own research. The suspicious man who filmed Miren just may be the same man who bumped into Eduardo and caused the heart attack. Garrido and Roberto are very likely involved in the mystery as well. But we do wonder how Jaime and his Madrid drama fit into the story.
