Japan-U.S. Summit Meeting
Episode 5 begins with the continuation of diplomatic talks between the President of America and the Prime Minister of Japan. The President demands that the details of the summit must remain confidential, with no discussion in the media. America presents its agenda, advocating for a fair trial for Kaide and his team under US law.
However, Japan insists that everyone aboard Sea Bat should be tried under Japanese law, as they are Japanese citizens. Neither party is willing to compromise, leading to a deadlock in the meeting. The US refuses to negotiate, while Japan accuses America of pursuing its own agenda and justifying the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as beneficial for Japan.
Meanwhile, the JMSDF is stationed in international waters in the Philippine Sea. Captain Lancing warns them to leave. Lancing says that JMSDF’s presence is disrupting US naval operations, and if they don’t leave, they’ll be fired upon. The commanders at JMSDF understand that America cannot initiate hostilities without justification, as it would be considered an act of war.
Despite this, Captain Lancing issues a final formal warning and, with no other option, fires a warning shot. The shot hits the Hurusame, one of the boats in the JMSDF fleet. Although taken aback, the JMSDF is not willing to surrender.
In the meantime, the American government has decided to go to war with Kaide. They choose not to negotiate with Japan any longer. When asked about Captain Ryan, an American Naval Advisor in Sea Bat, President Bennett says that America is willing to sacrifice one life for the sake of maintaining global peace.
America calls for a full-blown attack, with the 3rd fleet leading the charge while the 7th fleet is standing by for support. Captain Lancing orders his men to launch missiles at JMSDF. In response, JMSDF retaliates with an anti-missile attack and successfully intercepts nearly all incoming missiles. Captain Lancing knows that he is now at war with both JMSDF and Sea Bat simultaneously.
Lancing fires two anti-submarine missiles, but Sea Bat manages to evade both. Kaide sees this as an opportunity to legally retaliate against the 3rd fleet. He orders the launch of Tomahawk missiles 1 & 2, catching the third fleet off guard. However, the third fleet is prepared and activates their anti-missile defense systems, destroying both missiles in mid-air.
Nonetheless, the debris and air disturbance from the blast render the 3rd fleet’s RADAR ineffective. Captain Lancing, though angry, is somewhat impressed by Kaide’s genius. Kaide plans to continue his assault and orders the assembly of torpedoes 3, 4, 5, and 6, wasting no time in firing them. With the 3rd fleet’s RADAR system out of order, they are unable to detect the attack in time.
One of the missiles hits USS Abraham Lincoln, the ship on which Lancing is stationed, leaving him with no choice but to evacuate. As news of the destruction of USS Abraham Lincoln reaches President Bennett, he becomes certain that there will be no further negotiations with Japan, and they will proceed to fight against the Sea Bat.
As for the PM of Japan, he is unsure whether to support Kaide or not. However, after seeing how self-obsessed President Bennett is, they begin to understand why Kaide is fighting against America. America’s attitude suggests that they view Japan as their subordinate and expect them to comply with their demands.
