The Silent Sea is the newest Netflix original K-drama, combining outright sci-fi with horror, fantasy and drama. With a stacked cast and a special release date, this drama looks set to end the year with a bang!

The Silent Sea Plot Summary

The Silent Sea is set in the future, with our planet suffering from a lack of water and food, caused in part by desertification. At the center of this hellish existence sits Yoon-jae, a soldier for the space agency. He’s hand-picked alongside a team of astronauts (which includes Ji-An) to travel over to the moon on a perilous 24-hour mission. Their objective is simply to retrieve a mysterious sample from an abandoned research station.

The Silent Sea Cast

Gong-Yoo

Gong-Yoo fronts the team in the role of Han Yoon-Jae. This is the exploration team leader, who is tasked with carrying out the mission and given limited information. He’s selfless and looks out for his crew.

You may recognize him as the suit-man from Squid Game, as well as the lead star in Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (Goblin), Coffee Prince and Train To Busan.


Bae Doona

Bae Doona plays the role of Doctor Song Ji-an. She’s an astrobiologist who joins the team, determined to discover the truth behind an accident at the now-abandoned Balhae base research station.

You may recognize her as the lead female in Stranger Seasons 1 and 2 as well as both seasons of Kingdom


Lee Joon

Lee Joon stars as Captain Ryoo Tae-seok. He’s the Head engineer and an elite member of the Ministry of National Defense.

This is Lee Joon’s first acting role since he was discharged from the South Korean military on December 19, 2019. You may recognize him from older k-dramas like Vampire Detective, Pinocchio and Sent From Heaven.


Heo Sung-Tae

Heo Sung-tae jumps in a supporting role as Kim Jae-sun. He’s the Chief of Resource Group of Aviation Administration.

You may recognize him from fellow k-dramas Squid Game, Racket Boys, Beyond Evil, Voice Season 3 and Tunnel.


Lee Moo-Saeng

Lee Moo-Saeng plays the role of Gong Soo-hyuk, who happens to be the head of the security team.

Moo-Saeng has starred in a range of different dramas and movies, including Prison Playbook, The Crowned Clown, Chocolate and The World of the Married.

Where Can I Watch The Silent Sea?

The Silent Sea is available to stream on Netflix worldwide. As this is an exclusive original series, this is the only place you’re going to be able to watch this show.

The Silent Sea Release Date

The Silent Sea is scheduled to release on Friday 24th December at approximately 3am (ET) / 8am (GMT). Expect this to be pretty close to the release time.

The Silent Sea is also available with subtitles from its release. Expect dubbing to also be available; judging by the trend seen with both Hellbound and Squid Game, expect Hindi, French and Polish subs/dubs to be available at launch.

How Many Episodes Does The Silent Sea Season 1 Have?

Season 1 of The Silent Sea is an 8 episode series, with all episodes dropping at once. Expect the episodes to be roughly between 45-58 minutes long, which is consistent with other original Netflix k-dramas.
