Halloween & Oat Milk
In The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3 Episode 6, Taylor is crashing with Bela and her suitemates due to problems she’s been having with her roommate. But, as the suitemates don’t love the new presence, Bela decides to try fixing Taylor’s problem.
Arvind suggests she help Taylor find a new hobby, and Bela comes up with the idea of finding her a girlfriend. She signs her up for queer speed dating, but Taylor says she doesn’t want to date right now.
Bela finally admits that Taylor has been driving her and her suitemates insane. Eventually, she goes to apologize for the comment and is confused to discover Taylor getting along with her roommate. Taylor confesses that wasn’t her problem.
It turns out she has a crush on her roommate, who isn’t into girls, which makes it hard to be around her. Sympathetic to her dilemma, Bela gives her the room key back after obtaining a promise that she’ll be nice to everyone.
Kimberly is overwhelmed by the qualifications of the other students in Professor Friedman’s seminar, so she lies about having worked with the governor of Arizona to seem as accomplished as the others. Unfortunately, she’s immediately caught out.
Later, Professor Friedman talks to her about her lie. She tells her that her classmates probably see her as the runt of the litter, so she’s going to have to work extra hard to prove herself.
Trying to do just that, Kimberly roasts a guy in her class, but goes a bit too far and ends up being labeled a bully. Her professor says she might not belong in the symposium if she can’t figure her way out of this on her own.
Her suitemates tell Kimberly that some people will misunderstand her no matter what, so she should really just be herself. Taking that to heart, Kimberly gives a great presentation in her class and impresses everyone by incorporating her personal experiences into it.
Meanwhile, Kacey struggles when the play’s director singles her out during rehearsal. But her spirits are boosted when Cooper asks her out.
When she shares she’s going on a date, her suitemates’ advice is split between whether or not she should admit to Cooper that she’s a virgin.
During the date, Kacey freaks out when he invites her to his dorm to watch a movie, thinking that he’s going to want sex. She later works up the courage to tell him she’s a virgin, and he’s understanding. He says he likes her and wants to take things at her pace.
Meanwhile, Whitney and Canaan have an awkward interaction at the KJ House. But when Canaan finally apologizes to her, she starts to think they can be friends.
Whitney and Isaiah run into Canaan when they go to the gym on their first real date. Isaiah tries showing off in front of them, which Canaan finds amusing.
Whitney stays up all night with Isaiah right before a big soccer game to alleviate her guilt over becoming friendlier with Canaan.
The episode ends with her tearing her meniscus during the game. Her coach says she can either sit out the rest of the season to heal or get cortisone shots to help with the pain and deal with a longer healing process. He pressures her to do the shots so she can keep playing, so that’s what she decides on.
The Episode Review
What is up with writers putting Arvind and Bela together and then immediately ignoring the new couple? If they didn’t have plans for the new couple, they could have at least played out some will-they-or-won’t-they tension a bit longer. Or maybe they couldn’t have, as this show doesn’t seem to be able to draw out plotlines for longer than two episodes.
Taylor’s storyline this episode fell a bit flat, although it’s possible we’re only revving up to the real drama behind what’s causing her to room with Bela. Did anyone else get the feeling Taylor was lying about crushing on her roommate?
As for the speed dating scene, I found it unnecessary and unfunny. It jumped at the chance to stereotype queer women to… try and position Taylor as one of the few sane ones?
I am hopeful that an interesting storyline for Whitney is coming up. She’s put off dealing with her mental health, only now for her physical health to take a hit. I’d love to see a path to self-love for her character, as she’s so often focused on what she needs to accomplish rather than what she needs, period.
