The Hammer
Episode 2 of The Rookie Season 6 starts with Nolan and Juarez checking out a noise complaint. They get serenaded, and the song’s lyrics are wild, rendering them speechless. In the end, Nolan walks away in defeat. I guess there is no sexy arrest for these singers!
Presently, Nolan and Bailey are getting married in 24 hours and are rushing to get everything ready ahead of the big day. They are about to walk out of their home when Henry calls Bailey to inform her he might be late for the wedding. His flight got cancelled, and Bailey quickly tries to find a plan B. She doesn’t want Nolan to know and freak out, so she keeps it a secret. They also get a surprise visit from Chastity and Randy. Yep! Disaster is about to happen.
Pete could not make it to the wedding; he got arrested owing to an outstanding warrant for parking tickets. Pete sent his girlfriend and Randy to attend the wedding on his behalf. Nolan and Bailey welcome them into the house and take over the guest room. Nolan quickly informs Randy there will be no bachelor party, but this doesn’t stop these two from causing chaos.
Nolan and Bailey meet their wedding planner, who is not ecstatic about the new venue. They need to upgrade their plans to be able to throw a beautiful yet simple ceremony. The wedding planner is also having a personal crisis, so Bailey and Nolan offer to help. She sends them to meet with the DJ and give him a down-payment. Unfortunately, Nolan is forced to arrest the DJ after he confesses to two crimes and tries to sell them drugs.
To make matters worse, Nolan is reminded by Wesley about a deposition he was to attend. Apparently, Oscar is suing him for gross negligence during his kidney operation. Monica is his lawyer. She insists that Nolan has evidence of the crime on his phone and asks that he give it up. Backed in a corner, Nolan agrees to leave his phone and rushes to help Bailey with the wedding preparations. However, he decides to keep these legal issues a secret from Bailey. They are now both keeping secrets from each other.
On the other hand, Sergeant Wade and his wife are doing fine even though she lied about returning to finish her psychology degree. Wade is still proud of her and supports her desire to better herself and the lives of those around her. She has been a great support for Thorsen. Speaking of Thorsen, he is still struggling and refuses to share this with his new therapist. He feels it will set him back from returning to the field. In turn, he is relying more on Juarez, and Harper warns her to be careful not to get overwhelmed by this trauma bond she has with Thorsen.
Speaking of Harper, she is currently training Juarez while Nolan is on leave. She has yet to get a new nickname for Juarez, but it is only a matter of time. Juarez is scared and wants to impress Harper. She wants to prove herself, but things are tricky on this front. Her first case with Harper comes after they are called to a dog poisoning dispute. It turns out that the dog got high on heroin after chewing on one of his owner’s planters. They bring in the man who sold the planters to the woman, but he denies knowing anything. Juarez is unable to flip him, and Harper and Lopez use this as a teachable moment. They really enjoy messing with their boots!
Another team walking on a thin line is our favourite, ChenFord. Bradford thinks Chen is wrongly accusing him of being worried about her desire to become an undercover detective. They are forced to team up when Randy and Chastity accidentally sell Bailey’s wedding ring to a pawn shop. A man named Hammer buys the ring, and Bradford and Chen are tasked with getting it back before the wedding.
Hammer insists on a one-on-one fight with them in exchange for returning the ring. Even though he has an outstanding warrant, they can’t use this as leverage as he bought the ring legally. Ultimately, Bradford fights Hammer and wins. They manage to get the ring and arrest Hammer as well. However, the fight is not easy, and Bradford faints right after winning.
Circling back to the wedding preparations, the florist cancels the couple’s order after he fails to reach them multiple times. Nolan asks Bailey to relax and calls his boys over to make new flower arrangements for the wedding. Unfortunately, Bailey is unable to relax when the bakery delivers the wrong cake earlier than planned. She is forced to call the girls and convince them to help her bake a cake that Nolan isn’t deathly allergic to.
The two meetings give clarity to some people as they advise each other on their struggles. Bradford strives to prove he is not worried and summons Chen to the police station. Bradford agrees to take a lie detector test and realises that Chen being an undercover detective scares him.
Finally, the wedding day arrives, and all the small fires have been handled, or at least we thought so. The priest is unable to make it, and Wade steps up to officiate the wedding. The couple exchange beautiful, moving vows and are pronounced as husband and wife. Hooray, and long live the couple! At the reception, Thorsen accidentally misreads Juarez’s actions when she promises to be there for him. He moves to kiss her, and she pulls back. She quickly clarifies the situation, and Thorsen is hurt. He starts doing shot after shot, causing Bradford and Chen to worry.
At the same time, Juarez gets a call from the planter seller. He is ready to snitch now that his life is in trouble. She rushes to save him and is kidnapped too. She is lucky enough to call Harper and alert her of the situation before she is grabbed. Nolan quickly apologises to Bailey and rushes to save Juarez. Thankfully, Bailey is an understanding wife. The team gears up and manages to save Juarez and the planter seller.
The following morning, Nolan returns home and finds Bailey passed out from the previous evening. She is glad everyone is safe, and they are looking forward to their honeymoon. However, they pass out, and they will likely miss their flight.
The Episode Review
This was officially the series’ 100th episode. It has been six years since we were introduced to these characters. Nolan has come a long way. We lost Jackson and Zoe, but we also gained new characters, such as Harper, Juarez and many more, who we have grown to love. It took a lot of time and effort to bring this series to reality, and as fans, we are grateful.
Anyway, back to the episode’s plot, The Rookie teased that this would be one hell of a wedding, and it was. The couple struggled to make it all come together, and thanks to their family and friends, they made it.
As for Chen and Bradford, it is evident that Lucy feels validated after Bradford finally admits he is scared about her becoming an undercover detective. He is scared but not jealous, as Chen previously accused him of. Chen is projecting her feelings on Bradford, and he is in a no-win situation. He is allowed to be scared after what his ex-wife put him through. However, this doesn’t mean he is jealous or will go above and beyond to curtail Chen’s career.
Lastly, I feel for Thorsen. He is lost and feels Juarez is the only one who understands him. He misread their relationship, and now we have to wonder if this will affect their friendship. Also, did Thorsen just kiss Juarez because of their trauma bond, or has he been harbouring these feelings for long? Is Juarez sure she has no romantic feelings for him, or was she just startled when he kissed her?
