The Paradise of Thorns (2024) Ending Explained – Who gets the orchard in the end?

The Paradise of Thorns (2024) Plot Summary

The Paradise of Thorns is the feature film debut of Boss Naruebet Kuno who is known for the hit show, I Told Sunset About You. Starring Jeff Satur and Engfa Waraha in lead roles, the movie is a suspense drama complete with family politics, marriage inequality, mind games and betrayals.

It begins with Thongkam and Sek, a gay couple pooling their resources to run a durian orchard. With Thongkam’s money, they buy back the land that belonged to Sek’s father and register it under Sek’s name. Unfortunately, they are not able to enjoy the fruits of their labour for long as an accident costs Sek his life. In comes his scheming mother, Saeng and her caretaker, Mo who is like a daughter to the old lady.

While Thongkam accommodates them in good faith, he soon realises that they are trying to take his durian orchard. And with Thailand yet to legalize gay marriage (don’t worry, it has been legalized now), it isn’t looking good for Thongkam as anything that belongs to Sek, goes to his next living relative – his mother.

Well, given the shocking plot twist and bittersweet conclusion, here is an ending-explained article on the movie, The Paradise of Thorns.

Do Jingna and Thongkam truly like each other?

Mo’s brother, Jingna is brought to learn the ropes of durian farming so Saeng can later kick out Thongkam. Jingna is attracted to Thongkam instantly as he makes a move when they share a bed. He also gets annoyed when Thongkam constantly talks about Sek. Later we learn it is because he didn’t like Sek for stringing along both Thongkam and Mo.

As for Thongkam, when he learns that Sek and Mo had a relationship, he sleeps with Jingna out of revenge. But it seems like he genuinely likes him when Jingna helps Thongkam get ordained.

During Thongkam’s tenure as a monk, Mo emotionally blackmails Jingna into sabotaging the orchard. Jingna regrets it when Thongkam finds out. When it rains, he helps Thongkam reinforce the durians. He offers to leave with Mo once Thongkam gets the orchard back. Touched, Thongkam invites Jingna to live with him.

They end up dating and Thongkam indulges Jingna when they visit a temple and the latter wishes they can all live happily together. Once Mo kills Saeng and takes the orchard, Thongkam decides to leave and asks Jingna to marry him. Jingna agrees and even goes as far as to reveal his sister’s darkest secret – Mo killed Sek. After Thongkam learns of Sek’s betrayal, he decides to move on with Jingna.

Why is Thongkam upset with Sek?

Once Mo and Saeng show up and the fight for the orchard begins, Thongkam learns that Sek not only slept with Mo but had a relationship with her. It seems that Sek used Mo to take care of his mom and used Thongkam to take care of his land.

As the petty fights between Mo and Thongkam increase, she further goads him into thinking that Sek used him to earn money. She claims that Sek planned to kick Thongkam out after their durian business flourished so he could marry her.

At the end of the movie, as Mo and Thongkam fight, she gives up and reveals what truly happened. A flashback shows that Mo was indeed right and she and Sek planned to use Thongkam to get the orchard and then drop him. She wasted 10 years waiting for Sek but he truly fell in love with Thongkam. He gives her all his savings, gets her a job and leaves her for Thongkam. Having learned that Sek initially meant to fool him breaks Thongkam’s heart.

Does Saeng believe Mo and Thongkam?

Mo constantly takes care of Saeng in hopes of the old lady giving the land to her. Initially, Thongkam takes a page from her book and does the same. When Saeng refuses to let him nurse her, he goes another route. He gets ordained as a tribute to her and offers to make a million in profit on her behalf with the durians. She agrees to adopt him legally and leave the land in his name should he succeed.

When Mo sees Thongkam and Jingna, she is upset and tries another tactic to win back Saeng. She takes her to an airconditioned supermarket and treats her. However, when she asks about kicking out Thongkam, Saeng has other plans. She wants the status quo to remain as only Thongkam can negotiate and sell the durians for them.

She also refuses to adopt Mo or sign over the land to her. Mo has had enough as she breaks Saeng’s wheelchair, dumps her in a basket near a cliff and walks off. When Mo actually leaves, a desperate Saeng signs over the title deed to her, begging her to come back. But when she falls, Mo lets her die, having gotten the land in her name.

Who gets the durian orchard in the end?

Once Mo gets the land and marries Officer Tang, Thongkam and Jingna decide to steal some of the durians and leave. Mo catches them and starts destroying the durians they have taken. Upset, Jingna exposes Mo – Sek didn’t die immediately after his fall. He needed his mother’s signature to get an operation but while waiting for Saeng to arrive, he died.

Turns out, Mo pretended to have an accident so Saeng wouldn’t be able to reach the hospital in time. Thongkam is furious and starts destroying the orchard. A scuffle ensues as Mo tries to kill him. She gloats that even if she dies, he will never get the orchard. He decides to rape her as this way at least his child will inherit the orchard. He stops upon learning Sek’s true motives from Mo.

Apart from the money, he fought for the orchard as it was his and Sek’s. Heartbroken, he tells Mo to take it. However, her husband, Tang attacks Thongkam. Jingna shows up and Tang accidentally kills him. Taking all the money that was made from the second batch of durians, Tang runs off.

Thongkam is in shock as he numbly gives his statement in which the cops wonder how he is related to Mo and Jingna. He then leaves while a grieving Mo walks down the orchard which now belongs to her for good.
