Episode 9
Episode 9 of The On1y One begins with Miss Jing teaching the class about periods and ellipses. She says that while the former puts things to a stop, the latter signifies that there is more to be said. The students then attend their sports class where the teacher announces that the annual sports meet is happening soon.
Tian, who has never participated before, agrees to participate this time. The rest of the class says that thanks to Wang and Tian, their class has a chance of winning this year.
Qi Jiahao walks away from the class but is caught by Xi, who noticed he isn’t getting on with the other students. Jiahao rails against Wang for being smarter than him and getting along better with the others without even trying. He points out that the system forces students to compare themselves to each other. Xi comes back to the classroom looking disheartened and Miss Jing offers him some words of comfort. He also gives her the scones that Lin made.
The day of the annual sports meet arrives. Tianyang has made embarrassing t-shirts for the class and Wang convinces Tian to wear it by calling him “older brother” in front of everyone. Later, the Dean makes a bet with the class since they came in last during the previous meet. If they come first this time, the Dean agrees to streaking (running naked on the field) at Xi’s suggestion. If not, the students have to.
The games begin and we see that Tian’s father is among the spectators. When Tian’s team wins the relay, his father tries to speak to him but Tian brushes him off. Then the teacher’s race is about to begin but Miss Jing isn’t to be found. Turns out, she’s been kidnapped by Jiahao’s goons who blame her for mistreating Jiahao.
Xi and Lin find her soon enough and send the men running. Seeing Lin take care of Jing, Xi leaves the first aid kit with them and leaves. He looks sad and eats one of Lin’s scones before returning.
Class A, meanwhile, keeps winning the games and only Wang and Tian’s games are now left. Tian nails the high jump and Wang wins the long jump, although twisting his ankle in the process. Tian realises this before the three-legged race begins and insists they withdraw, taking Wang to the clinic.
Wang gets his ankle wrapped up and Tian draws ellipses on the bandages, a nod to the earlier mention about ellipses meaning that there is still something to be said. The rest of their friends come in and draw on the bandages as well. But they also reveal that the substitute players lost the three-legged race, which means the class lost the bet.
The boys (except Wang) pay up for losing the bet with the Dean and run naked on the field, despite the Dean telling them not to. Wang muses on the shining light of youth as The On1y One Episode 9 comes to a close.
The Episode Review
The On1y One Episode 9 offers a sweet, slice-of-life look at the high school’s annual sports day and all the shenanigans that come with it. Wand and Tian are on the same side and it’s nice to watch them root for each other.
We also spend more time with the other students in the class and the episode highlights their wholesome camaraderie. Even Jiahao gets a bit more depth during his conversation with Xi. His comments on the system and comparison are particularly significant.
On the other hand, I’m not sure what’s going on with Xi, Lin, and Miss Jing. At one point Lin is jealous of the other two and now it seems to be Xi. Love triangle or not, the show is only offering us confusion here and I hope they clear it up soon. Additionally, the kidnapping scene was so jarring and out of character for a slice-of-life series like this, here’s hoping the show doesn’t have any more such sudden genre shifts.
