The New Look – Episode 6 “If You Believed In Me” Recap & Review

If You Believed In Me

Episode 6 of The New Look opens with Catherine reliving the horrors of her time in Nazi captivity. Despite being safe at home, surrounded by comforts like soft sheets and pillows, with her brother Christian in the next room, Catherine is unable to find peace.

The haunting memories of her past continue to plague her, refusing to fade no matter how hard she tries. In addition, Catherine suffers from amnesia and is unable to recall even her own brother. The only memories that remain vivid are those of the atrocities she endured in the Nazi work camps.

Coco Chanel also finds herself in a dire situation, unable to pay her growing hotel bills. She constantly demands her lawyers to sue the Wertheimers for producing the No. 5 perfume without her consent.

However, Coco overlooks the fact that she herself terminated the contract with the Wertheimers by invoking the Nazis’ Aryan laws. Coco’s troubles escalate when Elsa Lombardi arrives at the hotel and demands money under the threat of exposing Coco as a Nazi collaborator.

As the episode flares, Boussac decides to invest in Christian’s idea of opening a new fashion house. He begins hiring designers and scouting locations for the shop. While Boussac supports Christian taking time off to care for his sister, he warns Christian that their partnership is a joint venture and he won’t wait indefinitely.

Meanwhile, Coco receives an invitation to a party hosted by the Wertheimers, held at the same hotel where she is staying. Coco suspects that the Wertheimers have staged this invitation to taunt her.

When Coco tries to attend the party, she is stopped by the hotel staff, who informs her that she is not on the guest list. In contrast, Elsa Lombardi is allowed to attend. As Coco eats her mundane dinner, Pierre Wertheimer approaches to mock her, stating that he is not afraid of her. Pierre also threatens to reveal to everyone that Coco used her connections with the Nazis to take their business by invoking the Aryan laws.

Christian tries everything to help Catherine remember what she has forgotten. He seeks help from a psychic and even brings in old friends, but nothing seems to jog her memory. One of Jean’s friends visits Catherine and takes her to Jean’s gravesite.

On the way, the young man shares his story of starting a printing press to produce leaflets against the Nazis. He reveals that he was one of the six students the Nazis were searching for but was saved when his captured friend refused to betray him.

Sitting at Jean’s grave, Catherine recalls her own ordeal of enduring torture where she remained silent, fearing that speaking out would result in the death of her friends and her brother.

As the episode draws to a close, Pierre unexpectedly appears at Coco’s door, revealing that it is his brother Paul who is producing and selling the No. 5 perfume. The interaction between Coco and Pierre hints that there used to be some romantic history between them.

The Episode Review

While Christian finds peace in Catherine’s return and recovery, Coco’s troubles show no sign of relenting. She is buried in debt, lacks the means to pay her hotel bills, and is bordering on eviction.

To add to her woes, Elsa resurfaces in her life, demanding money to keep quiet, a demand that comes at a time when Coco’s pockets are empty and her clothes threadbare.
